Pretty sure he donated his sperm by having sex w/the woman. The man also sent the kid presents and cards. He let his name be put on the kid's birth certificate because he thought it'd be in the child's best interests. His agreement to not have any rights or benefits in raising the child was a non-binding verbal agreement.

So my guess is the normal sperm donating at the sperm bank via anonymous paperwork and then artificial insemination is probably safe.
