Reading the article, it's not the people who were planning the event that canceled it for that reason. It was the church at which the event was going to be held that canceled it.

The organizers didn't say, "Hey we're going to have an interfaith shindig" and then freak out and say "Oh, shit, Muslims?"

Still sad. But not quite as bad as I originally thought.
