I was on facebook and saw an ad wanting me to sign a petition to stop a new bill that would give more funding towards nuclear energy (supported by moveon.org). I'm an environmentalist and support nuclear energy...I don't really understand moveon's position (another Chernobyl OMGGG?!)
QUOTE Building new atomic reactors in an age of terror threats is not only scary, but the toxic waste from nuclear power threatens our health and our planet. hmm, seems they are using the terrorist scare tactic as well...I'm a democrat, but on certain issues moveon is fucking crazy to me... I understand the whole toxic waste, but it is fairly minimal and can be quarantined in isolated remote parts. Plus it can produce ample more energy than are coal based systems (which are also not very environmentally friendly)... Plus developed countries (like France) has shown that it can work. -------------------- ![]() |

Fair enough
I guess 200 million tons of gloves, clothing, etc is a lot. However 52,000 tons of spent fuel is also a lot of waste. QUOTE The amount of HLW worldwide is currently increasing by about 12,000 metric tons every year source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_waste I am not saying that I oppose Nuclear power completely, I am just apprehensive about expanding the number of plants currently in the United States. This post has been edited by Dr. Gonzo: Nov 14 2007, 10:48 PM -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

Well i think everyone agrees we need safe ways to dispose of the waste, but as you said, the amount of pollutants from other sources of energy are FAR more dangerous than the relatively small amount of radio-active waste we have to deal with. But yes, we need to make sure to contain the waste in safe manners.... (at least we have the oppurtunity to control the radio active waste, vs not being able to control any of the gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels) -------------------- |
