Goes to Hank Steinbrenner. Less than a month after taking control of the Yankees he's already managed to alienate and tick off their fans, baseball fans, the media, the manager, and the players.

"Where was Joe's career in '95 when my dad hired him?" said the new Boss. "My dad was crucified for hiring him.

"Let's not forget what my dad did in giving him that opportunity - and the great team he was handed," Steinbrenner told The Post by phone from Tampa, Fla.

Before Torre, the Yanks had been to one postseason in 14 years. Not the smartest thing to say about a manager who just proverbially kicked your ass to the curb.


The Red Sox can have their Nation. The Yankees have the universe.

That the Yankees' Steinbrenner says otherwise is one-third arrogance, one-third ignorance and one-third stupidity. Then again, that sort of self-infatuation helps explain why the Yankees haven't played in a World Series since 2003 and haven't hoisted the sterling silver Commissioner's Trophy above their heads since 2000.
