Well a lot of their reasons were subjective, but there were two objective things that I checked out.

1) Claimed that lack of name recognition was the reason they weren't granted a chapter of some major national honor society. I contacted the society and found out that they hadn't applied for a chapter in something like 30 years. Reasons for turning them down included availability of library resources, number of scholarships given out, things like that.

2) They also claimed that lack of name recognition was the reason that they weren't listed as a Carnegie Foundation Tier 1 school. That I found was simply because they hadn't granted enough PhDs in the last reporting period.
