its just seems to me like this is a pretty rampant thing and the pats were just the first ones to get caught. i guess if it was against specific rules then that's fine they should be disciplined, but the underlying rule seems pretty dumb when you've got a stadium with 70,000 fans who could have cameras, HD television broadcasts, and play film for probably every play from every team easily available.
and its not any more confusing for the team to memorize that many plays, considering they already had to memorize the play itself and the verbal signals. besides, it's not the entire defense looking over to the sidelines, it's one guy, and usually a pretty smart one. |

The team staffs will watch game film looking for any edge and any hints they can. I'm sure some teams probably do put people in the stands and crap like that, and the Pats have been doing this for a long time, they just finally got caught. The suggestion that I've heard the most is giving the defensive captain and armband like QB's have with all the plays on it, then different colors next to each plays. The color they use for the plays could change at a moment's notice. For example, if the color for the first half is green then they would send in signals and it would mean a particular play under the green color, but if the color were red then the signal would correspond to a different play.
