The defense's case won't hold up. Mailboxes aren't personal property after they're put up, so he wasn't really defending his property.

I think you're a bit off base with this comment. I think the actual mail boxes are property of the government, mainly to to make it illegal for people to deliver non metered (unpaid for) mail. The actual mailbox assembly - stone statue, for lack of a better term - is property of the homeowner. It's not like the government can come repossess it, as they can with trashcans.

The first three feet of your yard is technically property of the government - this allows them to put up road signs, sidewalks, etc without dumbasses suing them. So while the mailbox might not technically be on your property, the mailbox itself is still your property. So the statement "it wasn't OK for this guy to come after the kids because they weren't on his property" holds about as much water as saying "it's not OK to stop someone from vandalizing your car if it's parked on the street in front of your house," since the street is technically public property.

Dumbshits got what they deserved, regardless of how the court sees it.
