The A-10 just takes damage really well. The F-15 was designed to use its body as a wing which is why this one was still flyable. Had he had fuel in that wing tank, he probably would not have made it. Back then I don't think they were using the self-sealing tanks on the F-15s. Now it's pretty much standard.
My uncle has tons of stories from the first Gulf War and his experiences during training with wing loss and engine failures. What really impresses me is the recent Boeing 777 engine failure incident with Continental. The engine did exactly what it was supposed to during a massive failure, it seized up and the titanium interior kept the blades from entering the passenger cabin. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |
