Technically they are LED's, just with Organic (has some carbon) compounds in it. Same concept as cones in our eyes, expect the transmission of photons is in the opposite direction. These things, like most organic compounds, degrade fairly easily. If it wasn't for their short lifespans, these things would be everywhere.
