Depictions of smoking in movies will now be a factor when deciding what a film's rating will be, possibly making a PG-13 movie R-rated, the Motion Picture Association of America said yesterday. The policy affects only new movies.

Along with violence, depictions of sex, adult language and other content considerations, ratings organizations will examine new releases to determine if they glamorize smoking or if it is pervasive through the films, even among adults. Underage smoking has always been considered when rating a film.

may sound dumb on the surface, but it makes sense, we're talking about the difference between allowing 13 yr olds & 17 year olds into a movie.

really the whole rating system needs to be revamped though. we'll have some movie that's barely rated R because of some smoking or other adult only activity, then we'll have some uber gore slasher movie with several softcore pr0n scenes rated in the same category. I think G, PG & PG-13 seem to be correct, but R should be split up into a couple of categories. or do how the premium movie channels do, show something like a ALNV (Adult situations, Language, Nudity, Violence) but with a little more detail.

Ok so after blabbing, that works pretty well, could do like a ALNV rating for each movie and do away with the rest... somethin like letter/number, A0L0N0V0 for the bambi 7, and A5L5N5V5 for the latest psychopath killer slasher bloody pot smoking alcoholic pr0n thriller.
