one of the main reasons texans are so proud is because of our history.

what other state fought another country, became its own country, had its own president, etc? plus, our economy is one of the best, if not the best in the union. farming, technology, cattle, oil, man we have just about everything.

I thought Texas had the largest state debt...or at least is in the top 5?

Not even close, unless something changed drastically between now and 2004. There was a time when it was written into our state constitution to limit the amount of debt we could have, but either our constitution was amended (highly unlikely) or the state legislatures found loopholes.

There was stuff all over the news about 2 years ago about how our state had like $6 billion in debt.

Yeah. That's about what it is. $6 billion isn't that much for a state this large. For comparison, in 2004, California's state debt was $55 billion, Florida's $17 billion, Illinois $25 billion, Pennsylvania $9 billion, Ohio $9.9 Billion, New Jersey $25 billion, Michigan $6.9 billion, Georgia $7 billion, North Carolina $5.8 billion, and New York $48 billion. Out of all those states, we had the lowest per capita debt at only $237. The next closest per capita debt was North Carolina at $682.
