the spartans were laconic in their rhetoric. laconia...and all... Ay. Aren't the lines about finding soil and water in a well, if you want our weapons come get them, we'll fight in the shade etc all from written accounts of the events ? They were raised to talk directly and to the point, with more focus on battle and war etc than art and literature. Or so they say !!@!! -------------------- QUOTE (Lance) now we have some dude from argentina wondering how to fuck dogmeat |

Ay. Aren't the lines about finding soil and water in a well, if you want our weapons come get them, we'll fight in the shade etc all from written accounts of the events ? They were raised to talk directly and to the point, with more focus on battle and war etc than art and literature. Or so they say !!@!! to the outsider, yes. but unlike the other greek societies they educated their women. they were smart in their own right, but yeah they didn't dick around in the commons and discuss philosophy and their history is passed down verbally. I haven't seen it, but have watched the commercials and stuff on youtube, and there are several historic lines taken directly from the accounts of the battle (the 'fight in the shade' one you mentioned). the one where Leo says 'tonight we dine in hades!' is another. and I don't know if they showed Leo's wife bidding him farewell, but spartan wives coined the saying, "come back with your shield, or upon it" when their husbands head off to war. I only know this crap because we studied laconic wit as a device in a lit. criticism class at NYU and the prof was all up sparta's ass for that section...considering they invented it. |
