I don't think anybody ever meant it to be a historical representation, as much as a story of how Frank Miller wanted to represent the battle of thermopylae.

I'm actually very much surprised at the opposing reactiong to this film. A lot of people love it. A lot of people hate it. Some say it has political implications when Frank Miller and Snyder claim that was not the intention. People have to realize this is Frank Miller's ARTISTIC representation of the legend of the 300. This is by no means supposed to be a historic retelling of the event nor an accurate portrayal of Spartans and Persians. You were supposed to hate the Persians in the story and so they were created as a demonic horde.
