Honestly, a lot of that has very little to do with gay people, but you brought up societal movements. I can see where coming out would be a huge struggle because many are still discriminatory towards gays, but that is becoming less and less with each passing day. How about the term "bitching" when used in reference to someone complaining? Thats not very offensive...just slang; however, use the word "bitch" and it then becomes offensive. In my opinion the same can be said of the word "gay". Call someone gay: offensive.... "thats so gay" slang but not offensive.

This is where the gay thing ties into the Mexican and black thing.... There is a point when you need to seperate offensiveness and normal everyday life. Just as black kids have for the most part not been subjected to racism like they think they have... so goes the whole "thats so gay" comment that is not used that way. Quit making yourself the victim when you arent is my point.

The problem is that I don't think female dogs are a portion of the population that has been struggling for equality. If that were the case, I would oppose the use of the word bitch as well.

Suicidal rates among homosexual males and lesbian girls might have little to do with their sexuality and more to do with their upbringing. Many openly gay people will admit to sexual abuse when they were younger. Maybe thats what causes a rise in suicide rates? You see what Im saying?

You cannot make a correlation like: Being a gay teenager means you are more at risk for committing suicide... unless you take into account the upbrining of said gay teenager. Im sure studies have been done regarding this, but I havent read up on them. Maybe there is a solid correlation between the two, but I havent heard that.

In the example you gave, yes, it was the ridicule associated with being gay that caused higher stress, but like I said many out of the closet gays have admitted to being sexually molested as children. *please note that I said "many" not "most" or "all"*

I mean sure, upbringing does have a huge effect, but it has a huge effect on everything psychologically. It's like saying that schizophrenia isn't as big a problem because some people can deal with it better due to their upbringing.

There could be other factors associated with the increased suicide rates in homosexual teenagers. In other words, not the fact that they are homosexual but what led them to that lifestyle.

What percentage of homosexual teenagers were abused as children?
What percentage of homosexual teenagers did not receive adequate bonding time with a same-sex member of their family?

I could ask a bunch of other questions....but hopefully by now you catch my drift...

All I can really say is you can't understand it because you didn't live through it. I had a shitty upbringing, and I never thought of suicide. I had a friend who had a GREAT upbringing, and he didn't just THINK of committing suicide....HE DID IT. I've always been very headstrong about who I am....some are not so lucky. Imagine being barraged day after day with the message that as a human being you are evil....you're sick in the head. It will drive you to do some fucked up things. Some people don't go for suicide....some instead go for drugs and risky sex.

Also, I am tired of hearing being gay as referred to as a lifestyle. Do you consider your loving of the opposite sex a lifestyle? Is everything you do in relation to your love-life? If you wanna talk about lifestyles, then you think of it as a gay man who decided to be a partier and druggie.....or a heterosexual girl who decided to be a slut and sleep with every man she sees. THOSE are lifestyles....your sexual preference is NOT a lifestyle.

Let me clarify, because you can RE-READ what i typed....I never said, "Suicide among gay teenagers is higher than among straight teenagers due to the anxiety associated with coming out and/or the response of the teenager's peers (ie ridiculing)" I said that suicide rates are higher amongst gay teens. I never put any "due to" clause in there. I merely put the two conditions there....you drew the conclusion for yourself.

And in all honesty, even if you went out and ran an experiment as a 'lesbian' you wouldn't have it quite as hard...because girls who are gay are certainly more accepted than two men who love each other.
