iPhone competition? (nope), If only we got actual good phones in the U.S. Options

The Samsung SGH-F520.......slidey up, slidey over! Screen is a touch screen also. I know I am nuts, but I am getting an iPhone. It's coming out right when I get my upgrade (even though that takes NO MONEY off).

Just when you think you're too jaded to get excited by a new cell phone design, someone comes along and slaps you in the face with innovation. This morning, Samsung slapped me hard with the SGH-F520. It's the little(?) brother of the kickass SGH-F700 that we showed you last week, but in my opinion it's way cooler.

The sweetest thing is obviously the dual-sliding design. Slide the face up, and a number pad and directional pad appear. Slide it to the side, and you get a full QWERTY keyboard. Oh, and the screen is a touchscreen, if you want a third way to control it. It's innovative yet simple and immediately intuitive. That's why it sucks extra hard this time to learn that this is heading straight for Korea, with no plans to release it stateside. Why do you torture us so, Samsung? — Adam Frucci

So it doesn't have 3G, oh boo fuckin hoo. They come out with a "new, faster technology" like once a year. First GPRS, then EDGE, now 3G...soon 3G will be the "slow" transmission format. People get way too hung up on little insignificant details. The phone has WiFi....if you're in an airport or coffee shop, you wont need the stupid 3G. What are you planning on sending, PDF files?

yeah, new technologies come out every other year, however, 3g is the only one that is widely implemented, and the only one that will be implemented for the next few years. Deployment of these technologies generally takes forever. And while you may not use your phone for much, I use my EVDO religously whenever I'm in dallas (I have a treo 700WX) and i'm counting the days until it's released here in LBK.

And dude, chill out. It's a phone. Just another phone. And worst of all, it's the first generation of a new phone OS. Right there that speaks to no-no notfuns. The iPhone may be great for you. If that's the case, go sign up for the most antiquated network in the country and use faux-revolutionary hardware. The rest of us will use cheaper, more functional and more expandable phones without our white headphones.



Even the iPod blew chunks during the first generation. iphone won't be any different. I'm already totally sick of that damn name.


edit: as far as EVDO uses, I use it as a modem via bluetooth whenever I'm not near an unsecured AP, and I use it to kill time whenever I'm anywhere bored. I send and recieve video with friends. I even used it as my ISP in dallas for a while when I was staying with a friend for a month and he had no interwebs. (<3 my SERO plan) If you really think that 3g is useless, go pick up your Motorola STARtac and quit whining. It's smaller anyways.


edit again: EDGE was never fast. It was fast for cingular, which is the oldest, most antique network in the country. If you think 100k is fast, then yeah, EDGE is blazing. EDGE was outdated before cingular even rolled it out. (no lie.)
