So uh. If I carry a fully-charged, spare laptop battery around with me, does the charge deplete while it's just sitting there, and would I need to charge it back up every now and then, or how's that whole thing work?

If its NiMH or LI they will both dissipate because of internal ESR and field effects. As Christine said, moist enviroments cause E and M fields to breakdown quicker and so the internal battery dissapates, but at a very slow rate. The problem is that the internal charger will try to put too much current throught it initially when it is almost fully charged. Put it on a trickle charger about every two weeks. The current should be around 1% of its mAH rating.
