So, I've decided to work out a new backup plan and thought I would share.
1. I am using a 320GB LaCie drive to do manual backups once a week (or whenever I feel it's a necessity). 2. Amazon S3 (talked about it before) is what I am using for remote backups in conjunction with JungleDisk and rsync to make incremental backups once a month or whenever I need to. 3. A monthly DVD that is burned of all important data (e-mail, documents, etc.) I also upload my photos to flickr but only some of them, I will back all of them up in the original form to S3. I am going to be trying this setup out over the next few months and seeing how it works. The only part I cannot automate is the burning of the DVD but I am working on that. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

i've read a lot on the blu-ray vs hd-dvd and it honestly seems to me like about a 60-70% chance blu-ray will win out. all of the high end video gurus are saying that with what we have right now, hd-dvd is noticeably better quality than blu-ray as far as movies go. hd-dvd is also cheaper to produce. but then on the blu-ray side, you have way more companies invested, as well as a significant amount more space to work with.
personally i don't like the fact that blu-ray requires all systems to support JVM. this alone will drive up the cost of the players, and i don't really see the point. imho dvd movie menus are already getting out of hand, and this will make things much worse. blu-ray also seems like it's built on much smaller tolerances and could result in more fragile or bad discs. we'll see how it goes but it'd be nice for it to just hurry up and end so we can get some reasonable PC drives on the market. |
