This basically means they can still sell alcohol since they are grandfathered in but now prices are going to increase 1.5% for the city sales tax.

Alcohol still cant be sold in the rest of the city.

The city of Lubbock is now wet, though hopefully not too wet.

The City Council finalized its annexation of "The Strip" on Tuesday and updated its irrigation ordinance to reduce waste from lawn watering.

The council voted 5-1 to annex the row of package alcohol stores along the Tahoka Highway.

Councilman Floyd Price voted against the annexation. Price has long criticized the plan as a money grab. The city estimates it will gain about $500,000 - equal to a half a cent on the property tax rate - in sales tax revenue through the annexation.

The city will add 1.5 cents to the sales tax charged at The Strip, meaning area residents will have to pay 1.5 percent more for their beer, wine and liquor. For example, the addition to the sales tax means a $6.99 six-pack of beer will cost 10 cents more.

Andy Burcham, the city's director of fiscal policy and strategic planning, said the sales taxes won't kick in until April 1, in accordance with state law.

"They give them a little time to get ready ... change the computers and stuff," he said.
