Ok, reading some of the comments someone who claims to have been there says this:

If someone calls you a cracker, you have every right to call them whatever you want.

And to seth:

I don't give a shit what that term meant 300 GOD DAMN years ago. As of today, cracker is equivalent to nigger. Both are equally held as racial slanders. Society changes in time and language does as well. After all, it makes no sense to call white people crackers when we don't use whips nor own slaves. Get out of the past.
