I've heard of some high expectations from nearing grads and was wondering what kind of starting pay you expect to make right out of college.

Also, what is the absolute minimal salary you would accept and what kind of industry do you want work in?

some places may offer you quite a bit, but if you take into account how much you're actually working, it's really not as much.

$75,000 / 60hr/wk / 52wks = $24/hr
$50,000 / 40hr/wk / 52wks = $24/hr

Yeah, but you are never going to get anywhere in life only working a 40 hour work week, I don't care what profession you go into .... The people who become CEO's and shit don't work 40 hour weeks very often ...

But how far are you really getting if you make 50% more for 50% more work? And what makes you think you can't get anywhere only working 40 hours a week? I'd go insane if I had to be up at work 60 hours a week. I like my co-workers and enjoy my job, but if I spent half my waking hours there I'd start to hate it. More time at work = more dislike for your job = crappy life IMHO.

"getting somewhere in life/work" imho is making more money for doing the same amount of work. it's the quality of your work that increases and that your company pays you more for. or, as your skills in your job increase, you can get more work done in the same amount of time.

see that's just the thing i'm talking about that makes no sense. why do people assume that time spent at work=advancement? you still didn't answer my question a few posts back. let me rephrase it slightly: if you have to spend 50% more time at work to make 50% more money, did you really make any kind of "advance" in your career? what exactly does career advancement mean to you? is it adding a title to your name? getting subordinates? getting a nicer office? making more money? taking on more responsibility? accomplishing things you couldn't accomlish when you started?

to me, advancement is increasing your pay rate as a result of increase in knowledge, typically due to experience. basically increasing your worth to the company=advancement imho. if i go back to some of the first bits of code i wrote when i started 2.5 years ago, it's horrendous compared to right now, and so was my salary . now i develop much better software, and my paycheck reflects that, and i still work 40 hrs a week (heh, typically less if you count the long ass lunches we take and 30 min breaks throughout the day, as well as mini basketball horse in my boss's office).

I know it's just that basically everything you just said I read as somone making excuses for not wanting to work hard and rationalizing about it

Personally, I leave work as soon as the clock rolls over to 5:00. I'm not paid to be there after 5:00, and I believe there should be a strong separation between work and home life.

I do enough advancing on my own time anyways... drawing up business plans, looking up patents, researching laws... so in about 5 years from now when I have my own company with people working for me and making me money while I lounge around on my yacht I can look back and laugh at Dogmeat putting in all that overtime to line someone else's pocket.

As I've stated above, you will find that people choose to put the time into their work. This does not mean they're 'wasting their life'. The worst jobs I've ever had in my entire life were 40 hour a week "cushy" jobs that everybody seems to go on and on about wanting to have and how wonderful they are, etc.
