Dateline, sexual predator bullshit Options

I'm watching Dateline NBC right now... they're doing a segment on sexual predators... something is really bugging me here. Here's the situation:

Cops + Dateline set up inside a nice house. The cops get online and start chatting with guys, posing as 13 year old girls wanting to have sex. They invite the guy over, have an 18 year old girl posing as the 13 year old, and this girl flirts with them when they get there until Dateline pops in, embarasses the guy, then the cops arrest the guy (who is 28). WTF!?! Now I'm not condoning 28 year olds having sex with 13 year olds, but this is bullshit... the guy never did anything illegal. It's still on NBC right now.

For these guys they catch, the doctors, managers, marines, etc., they are all caught doing something they know is wrong. Not one of them sits there stunned saying, oh? should i not have done that? but she asked me to?!!

1) Just because they say it's their first time and they've never touched a minor, doesn't mean its true. 2) To say it's okay if it really IS a 13 year old chick who really wants old man dick, is sick.

i have no sympathy for sexual predators. if you send explicit messages to someone you think is a minor than you are a sexual predator and have probably done it before and would do it again. I hope they rot in jail.

right, and i completely agree, but if you could be arrested for being a sick fuck, half the people on this board would be behind bars right now. and I'm not sympathizing with them, I'm wondering how the hell the cops can get away with this kind of shit, and why they're holed up in a damn house impersonating 13 yr old girls.

the fact is, these guys did not break any law, and there's no evidence to say they would have if the police officer had never impersonated an overly-horny girl to them. people will say things online that they wouldn't say in person. This board is a perfect example. I've met several of you for real (mostly at parties) and had a good time, yet on here we can get into fierce arguments. Who's to say (and arrest) someone would have done something given certain circumstances (circumstances which are completely being made up by the cops)? Sure these guys are sick for thinking they'd have sex with a 13 year old, but unless a real 13 year old girl gets online, sex talks with the guy, then gives him her address and begs him to come over, this never happens, and crime is never committed. Even if the cops get a real 13 year old girl on and tell her what to type, it's still not a real situation.

If these practices are considered ok, what's to stop them from sending you some fake tax form and nailing you for tax fraud? Or buying you a few extra drinks at the bar and then following you out and giving you a PI ticket?

another thing i noticed, was the vast majority of these guys were of arab descent, where they have extremely young marraiges. i'm not saying it's an excuse, i'm just saying it was interesting to note.

Yes they did break a law. It is illegal to solicit a minor for sex even if the the person that is the *minor* is not truly a minor A lot of law can be proved on intent. As people have said earlier if you ask they must reveal who they truly are.

How the hell are you trying to pull the arab card. I have seen just as many white trash guys on that show as I have minorities.

step back for a second and tell me how much sense this makes. so does this make it ok for these guys to solicit 13 year old girls who claim they're 18 (which no doubt happens way more often)?

Oh I dunno, maybe because they showed about 10 guys get arrested, and 7 or so of em were of arab.

i'm perfectly calm. i like to post up topics that will get people discussing a controversial subject. i enjoy trying to get people to look at things from a perspective other than the norm, whether it's wrong or right, it makes people think. and vice versa, I enjoy reading this forum because it makes me look at topics from a different perspective (believe it or not I do give every idea a shot, even the lance conspiracy posts). it's interesting to see all the different bits of knowledge people bring to the table, and i think it's great when someone demands the source of someone's facts. honestly you could take the whole group of posters here and put together a hell of a debate team.

anyhow back on the subject:
did these guys deserve to be arrested? yeah probably. are they disgusting losers? most definitely. do I condone sex with minors? of course not (although it'd have been pretty shitty if they'd had a 17 yr old girl and lured a 19 yr old guy). It's just that the manner in which they operated this particular sting seemed as though those they were arresting hadn't broken any actual law (even the girl posing as the 13 yr old when the men showed up was 18). if there is in fact a law that says "it's illegal to solicit sex to someone who simply claims to be a minor" then there ya go.
