Haha, today was an interesting night. I wandered over to campus because I had some homework I needed to do there, noticing that the cops had part of the street blocked off. I wondered about it, but continued on. I get to the intersection where I'm going to cross over to campus and get told by a cop, "Cross, but stay on the right!"

I cross and ask ANOTHER cop what's going on. He says that they were looking for somebody (armed, as I found out later) who had run from the cops. They figured he was in one of the buildings. He told me if I needed to head into campus that I should go east a ways (I needed to go west) before heading in. So I went east, then north, then west to the M.E. building.

When I get to M.E., I'm stared at by a group of people who had gotten there earlier for some function. "How did you get here?" they asked. I told them what I'd done, no I wasn't stopped by any cops except the one that I specifically approached myself, and we all had a big laugh about being in the midst of this mess. Meanwhile, there were about a billion cop cars around the SW quadrant of campus (M.E. is the southwestern-most building), including armored cars, swat cars, cops with rifles, etc. etc.

While I was there, apparently the following email was sent out:

QUOTE
UNM ALERT - October 6, 2006

Individuals in Clark Hall, Farris Engineering and Centennial Library are
to shelter in place, lock doors and stay put until notified by the UNM or
the Albuquerque Police Departments.

-- Kathy Guimond, UNM Chief of Police

Though I wasn't in any of those buildings, I was in a building right next door. Yet I walked in easily, walked out easily, got home, had fun times all around. Yay for incompetent manhunts! The UNM/ABQ PDs sure know how to keep people safe!
