I am thinking about getting a portable external harddrive. Does anyone have any experience with these? If you don't know what I am talking about they are those 2.5" external 5400 RPM harddrives that use USB for power.

several of us at high tech have them and like them. ive sold them to people after floppies, cd-rs and flash drives have all crashed on them and the portables seem to work well. never heard of any problems, but with any hardware im sure its possible.

the thing is, unless you are trying to fit it into a confined space, like in a bag with your laptop, then all externals are portable in the sense that you can pick them up and go like a flash drive. if you are just using it for personal use say at home and size isnt a key issue, go with the ones that arent labeled portable - theyll be cheaper than their more compact counterparts, but they still do exactly what you need them to.

The portability is definitely what I need. Something I can grab from my bag, plug-in, and use for work while sitting in an airport waiting on a delayed flight.
