World's Ugliest Dog Copes With Fame
Archie's Reign Lasts 12 Months

PHOENIX -- Being named the world's ugliest dog has changed the lives of one Phoenix pooch and his owner.

The former pound puppy won the 2006 Sonoma-Marin Fair World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, Calif., and bragging rights for a whole year.

It's far from Hollywood, but at an Arizona PetSmart store recently, there were fans and paparazzi.

"My mom sent me a picture, we just thought it was great," said fan Valerie Fowles.

Once an abandoned animal, Heather Peoples rescued the Chinese crested purebred.

People ask her "if he's got some horrible disease, and I'm like, 'No, this is how he's supposed to look," Peoples said.

But Archie's moles, mohawk hair and tongue that lolls to one side became the crowd favorite and the judge's choice at the ugly dog contest.

"We didn't really think we had a chance, we were just going to go to have fun," Peoples said.

Archie's reign will last 12 months. Next year, his biggest competition could come from his owner's other dog, Veronica.

Peoples also won $1,000 and treated Archie to a hamburger and chicken nuggets.

She planned to be interviewed by a German film crew and may appear in People magazine.

Blind Man Adopts Dog Named 'Ugly'
Shelter Launches Adoption Campaign

POSTED: 2:56 pm CST January 17, 2006
UPDATED: 3:19 pm CST January 17, 2006

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. -- Workers at a Kentucky animal shelter launch a campaign to get a dog named "Ugly" adopted.

Ugly had been living on borrowed time at the Shelby County Animal Shelter.

He got his name because he had been put in a run next to two pure-bred dogs. "I thought, man, he's the ugliest thing I've ever seen," said Monica Robinson, the shelter's director.

But Ugly's personality grew on shelter workers, and they couldn't put him to sleep. So they launched an e-mail and media campaign to get him adopted.

And that's when Dan Ernspiker, who is blind, heard of Ugly. "It caught my ear (that) they had this ugly dog," he said.

Ernspiker lost his sight two years ago after back surgery. He has personal assistants, but they are not there 24 hours a day.

"Being blind, I'm at home by myself at night, and I thought it would be nice to have someone else in the house in case anything did happen," Ernspiker said.

As far as the dog's name, Ernspiker said he knew without seeing the dog that it didn't fit. He has renamed the dog "Duke."

"I don't want someone around me named Ugly," he said.

same thing i was thinking
if your lifes work is to rescue dogs then wouldnt you think good things about all of them?

you would think so. but that's like saying all social workers like all children. some kids are smelly and mean.
