Congressman Charles Rangel (Democrat) introduced a bill (Universal National Service Act of 2006 - HR 4752 IH) aiming at drafting everyone from the ages of 18 to 42 into the military for a minimum of 2 years.

Quote from the bill:

To provide for the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States, including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes

This bill was introduced February 14th and is scheduled to be debated and possibily adopted on 6-6-06.

That reminds me ... would they draft known gays?

Based on what I've seen about the military's policy on gays, it's notoriously flexible when the military really needs people.

The degree of official and unofficial attempts to separate homosexuals from the armed forces seems to be directly related to the personnel needs of the armed forces. Hence, during wartime, it has not been uncommon for the rules regarding homosexuality to be relaxed, and up until 1981 it was the policy of all branches of the armed forces to retain a homosexual, at their discretion, thus promoting the "queen for a day" rule. This especially became the case during the Vietnam War, where some heterosexuals would fake homosexuality in an attempt to avoid being drafted or to be discharged rather than be shipped to Vietnam.
