some digital cameras have a click wheel selector that has options for portrait, landscape, night time, day light, and action shots (of things that are moving). these will set your aperture/shutterspeed/exposure for the best picture under those conditions.

my dad got a nikon for it's anti-shake features, but he still uses a tripod. if you dont' have room for a tripod, a monopod works. if you don't want to buy a monopod, find a screw that fits in the bottom of your camera, get some string, and a large rock. tie the string to the screw, attach it to your camera. tie the string around the rock at the length/hight you want your camera. pull up on the camera and so long as you're useing both hands to steady horizontal movement, you should be set for minimal vertical movement. (i do this a lot because i hate carrying my tripod around, i look all japanese touristy)

i know what nikon that is, i think. if it's the one i'm thinking of, he paid almost $800 JUST for the stabilization feature. the fact that he still has to use a tripod just goes to show why i'm not a huge nikon fan.
