Anyone reccomend any good avi to mpg converter software?

I'm trying to convert some anime over to mpg so i can burn it as a DVD and watch it on TV at a friends house, but I suck at the whole dvd authoring thing as i've never done it before..any info about how to do this painlessly and easily would be awesome

i've justed used nero in the past to back up my old family movies(porn) on dvd. It did all the converting and menus for me
