1.) For whatever reason, windows installer is not working.

"Windows® installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I can't install anything from a CD or from a download.

2.) Also, my CD/DVD-RW drive no longer shows as being able to burn DVDs. (Although I think I can solve this if I reinstall Nero...which I can't do until the first issue is resolved ARRRGH!!)


3.) My portable USB 2.0 hard-drive (WD 600U017-000 60GB Passport silver) is no longer recognized by windows.

Yeah clean install means completely reformatting the hard drive. You will boot off of the windows xp disc and just follow the instructions. When it gets to the screen asking which partition to install to, delete all the partitions on the drive, then choose the "unpartitioned space" as where you want to install it to. The installer will take care of the rest.
