I don't think we have monopoly on higher education but I think we have a large majority share. I do not have data to back it up but it has always seemed to me that the K-12 schools of some other countries are much better than ours, while our universities tend to be better than theirs. I think it stems from Asian countries or India that their K-12 kids are in school longer each day, more days per week (6? not sure), and studying more advanced material earlier. While this is great and leads to higher educated kids, IMHO it's also a detriment to them socially. Everywhere I have worked so far I must say that more often than not, the people of one of those foreign origins tends to have a difficult time socially or even just in their communication with their coworkers. I think they feel that it's not important in their K-12 schools but I disagree. It becomes difficult to work with someone who you can't communicate with or have a rapport with.
