Restaurant check question.... Options

OK, so here's the scenario....

I meet with a group of friends once a week for dinner. A single person organizes the dinner and sends an e-vite.

So this week, we get the evite and all meet for the dinner. When its over, the check comes...but we find out they won't allow separate checks. About 4 of us don't have any cash, so the "host" gets mad, takes the check and basically covers the bill for those of us who didn't have cash. Now, he's pissed at those of us whom he had to cover.

I think he should have called in advance to find out about separate checks, taking down the name of the person who gave him the answer. If the answer was "no" he should have either chosen a new place, or included in the evite a note stating that there are no separate checks, so everyone needs to bring cash.

What do you all think? Was he justified in being mad?

Well firstly, most restaurants are cool with you calculating the split on your own check and writing down Name - $$ on the back and running multiple cards, even if they can't/won't track the splits themselves and generate separate checks.

Secondly, did y'all offer to pay him back afterward? If so, he's silly to be mad.
