Hundreds of Bennigan's and Steak & Ale restaurants across the country closed suddenly today and the company that owns them filed for bankruptcy.

Phones went unanswered this morning at several Houston locations and others had been disconnected. At least one had a handwritten sign telling customers and employees it was closed.

Plano-based MetroMedia Restaurant Group confirmed that its subsidiary, S&A Restaurant Corp., has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. All corporate locations of its well-known storefronts, including Bennigan's, Steak & Ale and Tavern, will be shuttered for good.

The company said all Steak & Ales are corporate-owned and will close. Company spokeswoman Leah Templeton said franchised Bennigan's locations should not be affected.

It could not be determined immediately whether any of the 11 Houston-area Bennigan's locations will remain open. At least for today, all were closed.

MetroMedia will continue to operate its Ponderosa and Bonanza steakhouses, the company said in a statement

oh well.. no big loss IMHO. all they had going for em was the monte cristo and a pretty good selection of beer.
