When I was 17, I met people from online. I only met Tech students, though. I stopped after a while because 1) the breed of men online was creeping me out and 2) I realized that even though I was shy, I wasn't ugly so I didn't need to meet guys online. Oh and then I also figured out that most guys online only wanted to meet me because I was 17 and a Bible thumper (therefore could assume I was a virgin).
