Here's some comfort for him, for all Democrats. In Lubbock, Texas – Lubbock Comma Texas, the heart of Texas conservatism – they dislike President Bush. He has lost them. I was there and saw it. Confusion has been followed by frustration has turned into resentment, and this is huge. Everyone knows the president's poll numbers are at historic lows, but if he is over in Lubbock, there is no place in this country that likes him. I made a speech and moved around and I was tough on him and no one – not one – defended or disagreed. I did the same in North Carolina recently, and again no defenders. I never thought about Lubbock being the heart of Texas conservatism, but I guess it makes sense.

abilene is kind of weird.

you can buy liquor anywhere, but you cannot smoke in any restaurant or bar.

the bars all close at midnight, except on saturday, when they are open until one.

there are a lot of churches, but only one gun range.

they also have a lot of programs like noah project, etc. that seem fairly socially liberal.

that being said, having lived in both abilene and lubbock for a large amount of time, i cannot really distinguish one as being more conservative than the other. i think abilene may lean towards the religious type conservatives (not REAL conservatives) and lubbock may be populated with those more concerned with small business and farmers rights etc.

furthermore, i do not really consider lubbock as the bedrock of conservativism. it is a large mostly conservative city, yes, but there is a fairly diverse population. for example, in lubbock county, about 22,000 people voted in the republican primary and about 23,500 people voted in the democratic primary.

i think for a real grasp of extreme conservatives, you should probably go to those counties that have very few or no democratic primary voters.
