Vietnam?
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

Vietnam? Protesting did not stop the Vietnam war. If you recall, Nixon capitlized on it to get elected, then nothing happened. It ended as it would have regardless of all the protests. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

You think the protesting didn't have even the slightest impact on that war? Wow...well, ok then...How about Civil Rights protests? Those change anything? -------------------- |

The civil rights protests, meaning the million man march and the like, probably did. However, that was also basically the mother of all protests. A bunch of fat bitches with their shirts off whining about how horrible life is for something to do hasn't really ever changed a god damned thing, has it? -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Let's go protest against protesting. Fuck the First Amendment in general! I don't agree with what those hippie tree-huggers have to say, so they shouldn't be free to say it. Now if they want to talk GOOD about war, eliminating alternative fuels and ONLY focusing on the finite wonder oil, executing the mentally retarded, or whatever extremist right-wing bullshit you shove up you cock by the hour...then that's A-OK~!! But ANYTHING that challenges MY personal views is not only WRONG, but it should be outright banned for hurting the "common" good. -------------------- |

Zach, I've never once stated, or implied, "Fuck the First Amendment in general!" I have however, said that protesting in and of itself is largley ineffective, and overall, pretty fucking stupid IMO. I understand it's a first amendment right. That's fine, and I've never implied that it isn't. Just because it's a first amendment right, and probably even ... I don't know what's the other amendment that allows public gatherings and shit? I can't remember the number of that one. Anyways, I've never implied that it should be banned. Please, show me where i've said protesting should be banned. I've said I think it's fucking retarded, but did I say ban it? Nope, never. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Definitely true. Now what else? Vietnam War. The protests DID have an affect on this war, regardless of Dogmeat believes. They helped bring to light growing public oppostion to the conflict, something politicians were unknowingly or knowingly blind to. (Same could be said for some of the Anti-Iraq protests) To Dogmeat and Impala: You both see protesting as ineffective. What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? -------------------- |

(Same could be said for some of the Anti-Iraq protests) To Dogmeat and Impala: You both see protesting as ineffective. What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? I see most protesting as ineffective for most issues. The reason it worked during Vietnam is because you had an entire age group completely against the war because they didn't want to go. I'm not sure the Civil Rights protesting had any positive effects besides MLK's speeches. Instead the rioting and protesting in Detroit and places of the like created more chaos and made the African American population look bad as a whole (IMO). Personally, the silent protests and people who take action have more of an impact than those who loudly protest and proclaim something as wrong. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

But what is a silent protest? Explain this to me. A gathering of people for a common cause that attempt to bring notice to their particular issue by numbers and non-violent civil disobedience. See "sit-ins" as a similar example. -------------------- |
