i went to college becausei grew up with the mentality that i had to go to college. but if i had stayed in the barrio like my parents did growing up, i definitely would have had a different outlook on my future. everyone would be different though if they jad a drastically different upbringing. i guess i am "blessed" that i grew up for the first 10 years of my life in the barrio of west side san antonio, gang lines and all. my parents moved us out of the ghetto, struggled to do so but knew they didn't want my brother and i growing up like that and moved us to thr more ipscale area where going to college is emphasized. we never had that to look up to in the barrio.

Bingo, so how would throwing hordes of taxpayer money at your school have changed this situation? |

Bingo, so how would throwing hordes of taxpayer money at your school have changed this situation? it really is odd being on the same side as you, just so you know. but i agree, it's not the finances, it's the motivation -------------------- |

Which begs the next question: Why is there no motivation in low-income areas? parent taught. if your family is bitter about "failing" at their higher goals, what positive example will they set for the children? i feel the situation is completely opposite from what early Britain peasents faced. they lacked the opportunity to excel, when you have no chance, you sorta just accept your place in life. (until all hell breaks loose and a riot happens) but how can you ever expect a child to reach for the stars if you never teach them to look up? i firmly believe that all americans are given equal opportunity. but you have to have the initiative to take advantage of that opportunity -------------------- |

i firmly believe that all americans are given equal opportunity. but you have to have the initiative to take advantage of that opportunity Wow. I firmly believe that this statement is insane. There is no way someone born without a father present in the streets of Compton has the same opportunity as a son/daughter of a CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation. Yet alone racist, sexist, etc... sentiments that are still pervasive today... Also, someone on the boards went to TAMS?!! Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? -------------------- ![]() |
