QUOTE (Jessica @ Apr 13 2006, 12:48 PM) are you sure about that? or are you saying there is no oxygen on the moon? air doesnt equal oxygen. Im pretty sure there is air on the moon. No, Impala was correct. The moon is too small (too little gravity) for it to hold an atmosphere. There *is*, however, a small carbon dioxide-based atmosphere on Mars. -------------------- |

There is no oxygen in the moon's atmosphere but there are other gases. The total atmosphere on the moon though is very small compared to the Earth's atmosphere.
QUOTE This is also the phase when lunar soil would receive its first gift from the Amsterdam tulip trade, perhaps planted inside a plastic biosphere with carbon dioxide on tap. So it wouldn't actually be in the moon's atmosphere. -------------------- death to false dudes

I was thinking that since the earth's atmosphere is so big and the moon orbits the earth, that maybe the moon has some of the earth's atmosphere. Some sites are saying that there is no air on the moon, though. I dont know shit about astronomy though.

Some sites are saying that there is no air on the moon, though. I dont know shit about astronomy though. The Earth's atmosphere is effectively only 100 km thick (~62 miles). The moon is 384 km from Earth... so no, it doesn't share atmosphere with Earth. Any atmosphere the moon has is insignificant when considering things like putting plants up there. -------------------- |

so then is there air or not? I want impala to be wrong just cuz it would be funny. If there is no air, im going to launch a mission to put a jar of air on the moon.

If there is no air, im going to launch a mission to put a jar of air on the moon. Well, according to Wikipedia: QUOTE The Moon has a relatively insignificant and tenuous atmosphere. One source of this atmosphere is outgassing  the release of gases, for instance radon, which originate deep within the Moon's interior. Another important source of gases is the solar wind, which is briefly captured by the Moon's gravity.

so then there is. I shouldnt have second guessed myself. I knew solar wind was a factor on this end of the solar system.

I'm reading a book by Carl Sagan and it says this "Our Moon, for example, has at its surface less than one million millionth the atmospheric pressure on Earth." So its really small.

'air' is a term we have given to what we breathe mainly nitrogen and oxygen. the 'air' on the moon is completely different in so much as it is no longer what we call 'air'. its a different mixture of gasses that exist in what little atmosphere the moon has do to gravity and all that shiiiiiiiiiit

QUOTE (impala454 @ Apr 13 2006, 08:45 AM) hmm... maybe i missed something but i didn't realize plants could live in a vacuum Well, all plants really need to survive is carbon dioxide, sunlight, water, and nutrients, so if you built a greenhouse (an airtight container to keep the CO2 from floating off into space), it's possible. The plants they were talking about said that they "bring their own nutrients with them" whatever the hell that means. It's interesting because plants both consume carbon dioxide and produce it (along with oxygen) so it could be self-sustaining (like the terrarium you built in elementary school). Why it is worth building a terrarium on the moon when you can just use a 2 liter coke bottle? You got me. So Europe can say they did something in space before America? It would be interesting to see how the plants grow with 1/6th the gravity, but thats pretty much it. The only real problem i see is from the ambient temperature of the moon which fluxuates between -170 and 120C, which would obviously freeze/boil any water the plant would need to stay alive, so they would have to build a temperature controlled greenhouse for the plants (which you'd think would be difficult without manned mission) , or come up with a similar chemical gel with a higher boiling point and a lower freezing point that would allow the plant to photosynthesize. In either case, I think they already have this part figured out. They wouldn't be investing millions of dollars to research astrophysics and develop technology if they didnt think the entire basis for the mission was possible. -------------------- ![]() A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have. |

You could plant something, but it would die. There is no atmosphere (it needs carbon dioxide) and no water. The sunlight would burn it during the lunar day, and in the nighttime it would freeze. I don't know if the soil would provide the nutrients that it would need, because it is just rock dust; there are no organic components that earth plants need to fix nitrogen, and so on. Life on earth is very special and very precious!
