I figured you had two... hence "electives", not "elective". Advanced Thermo with Dr. James is pretty fuckin' awesome, and I don't generally like thermo/fluids stuff. If you need help with anything, let me know -- it looks like I'm missing part of HW 6, but otherwise have all of my homeworks and exams. As for your other elective... well I just hope that you don't have Dr. Idesman. Nice guy, but he can't teach for shit (at least not at the undergrad level). -------------------- |

No problemo! My favorite part of the course was probably derivative reductions... just math, so purely easy. I dunno why, but I "got" things in that class a lot more easily than my three classmates...
I think it was all open notes/open book (it was AT LEAST open notes), so doing the tests isn't very stressful. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Apr 4 2006, 11:07 AM -------------------- |

I'm hoping to finally learn how to derive values for enthalpy/entropy/etc from the hemholtz or maxwell equations or whatever they are ... Could have saved myself a lotta money if I'd had known how to do that in Thermo II/Heat Transfer/Thermal Fluids lab .... heh ... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

QUOTE (Dogmeat @ Apr 4 2006, 11:23 AM) What all do you learn in that class? I'm hoping to finally learn how to derive values for enthalpy/entropy/etc from the hemholtz or maxwell equations or whatever they are ... We started with typical energy balance stuff using enthalpy and whatnot, mixing of streams, basic 1st & 2nd law stuff. Then we did equations of state (ideal gas, Berthelot, virial, etc.), which are all the various ways to relate P, R, T, and v. That stuff was pretty easy and fun and used throughout the rest of the course. Then derivative reductions, which use thermo equations (hemholtz and something else, I think) to come up with relations between thermodynamic quantities... ds/dv at constant T, etc. I used calculators at http://www.macatea.com/workshop/ starting at this point in the class -- that might help you too. Easier than calculating some of the properties by hand via interpolation/extrapolation of tables. We learned about vugacity and then did stuff on mixed systems, finding properties of compositions. And there was stoichiometric stuff at the end, looking at combustion and other chemical reactions. -------------------- |
