When I was driving to work this morning I noticed a bunch of political signs along the side of the road. The usual McCain and local shit, but a few of em bothered me. There were a few signs for Constables and Sheriffs proclaiming their political affiliation.
Partisan politics has no place in officers upholding the law IMO. I don't want constables arresting people or giving them harsher/more lenient punishments based on their political beliefs. Their job should be to uphold the law without bias Does this bother anyone else? -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, I always thought that political parties should be disbanded in the justice department. Even though I don't like it, parties in policy making help get laws through.

Don't forget about death and the very unlikely possibility of impeachment
Political party affiliation doesn't always matter with judges as far as interpretation of the law goes... Example: Sandra Day Oconnor .... or john paul stevens The later was appointed by Ford but he has been fairly liberal in his interpretation of the law. This post has been edited by The Fanatic: Oct 29 2008, 10:32 AM -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

That is true, but look at judges on circuit courts whose appointments are not for life.

I don't see a problem with it. They declare their affiliation publicly instead of hiding it from the world. They are still lawmen and have a duty to uphold the law without bias. If you feel they're not capable of doing so, then don't vote party lines. Only difference between the elected official and their subordinates is you know the party affiliation of the official while you know nothing of the subordinates - the ones that are out working the streets. No, the elected officials do not always hire based on party affiliation, either.

you know what's funny to me? I'm not necessarily an Obama supporter and still haven't decided who i am voting for, but aren't the bailouts incredibly socialist? and let's not to mention all the anti-terror laws "for our own good."

In my opinion, the bailouts are an attempt to save the financial sector in order to keep our somewhat free market. It only deals with finances. Socialism deals with THE PEOPLE... how to make the people equal. Obama wants to spread the wealth. Rescuing (or attempting to) a few banks isn't going to spread the wealth. It's going to hopefully protect people's investments. Socialism has nothing to do with laws that invade privacy either. It's only about equality for the people. Theoretically, that's why neither thing that you said is socialist. In my opinion, socialism isn't necessarily "big government," but almost always is because the programs cost billions upon billions of dollars. Non-socialist governments can spend just as much if not more money building new roads, better schools, etc for the people. I think our current idea of what socialism is is really screwed up. I will say, though, Obama is very socialist by the very most literal meaning of the term.

Main Entry: so·cial·ism Pronunciation: \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\ Function: noun Date: 1837 1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods QUOTE I think our current idea of what socialism is is really screwed up. Well then, quit bandwagon-ing your definition of Socialism to fit whatever McCain and Palin espouse. The old Stars-and-Stripes won't be dipped in red paint when Obama is elected. Yes, the definitions of economic systems are in some ways fluid and can adapt over time. But what McCain, Palin, yourself, and others are claiming seems more akin to Communism. Yeah yeah...."Socialism is a stage to Communism"...heard that Marxist quote/tripe many times before. Doesn't seem to be the case in a majority of examples, nor would any such drastic changes EVER take hold/be accepted here in the U.S. -------------------- |

k. No, it didn't need to be said. I stated something that had absolutely nothing to do with McCain or Palin, and you go off on some tangent because you think I am clueless or something. If you read what I put about socialism again, it makes perfect sense. Socialism is economic policies that spread the wealth among everyone equally. A bank bailout doesn't spread the wealth. It protects investments. News for you: rich people make more investments than less wealthy people. Your idea of politics and economics is completely skewed. You seem to think that Obama is the farthest thing from Socialism - WRONG. You seem to think that trickle down economics doesn't exist. THAT'S THE MOST LAUGHABLE THING I HAVE EVER READ ON THIS SITE. Dear God. When the richest 400 people in our country are responsible for well over a TRILLION dollars of our economy, how can one not think that trickle down economics drives our economy? Whatever. I'm sick of the masses of blind sheep in this country. Want to know why this country is shit? Because our education system is quickly becoming the worst out of all the 1st world countries. We are shipping our jobs overseas because TAX PRICES for CORPORATIONS AND SMALL BUSINESS IS FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS. It has NOTHING ZILCH NADA to do with the healthcare of this country or the middle class struggling. Those are just results of the underlying problem. Continue to be blinded by his prophetous speaches about "change" and "distributing the wealth." I guarantee if Obama is elected, we are going to be in a hell of a lot worse financial trouble than we already are. Additionally, we will become the world's anus for all those terrorists because they will KNOW they can fuck with us now with a pussy like him in office. My parents are the epitome of a middle class family (ie anyone that makes less than 250k/yr). They know that Obama can't help them. If anything, they will get taxed more to pay for socolistic programs like universal healthcare.

The bailouts teeter on socialism and go completely against the "conservative" ideals. It is one thing for the fed to play with rates but it's another to reward bad behavior. I am torn on the anti-terror laws. I think the unwarranted phone-tapping is over the line and should be done away with. If we keep doing similar things in the name of "freedom" we will be no better than Soviet Russia or McCarthy Era-USA. However, I do think there is a very real war going on against terrorism and I would like to see us continue to stabilize Iraq while moving troops to Afghanistan. One area that Americans are horribly misinformed on is the current usage of foreign oil in the states and how much actually comes from Canada and not the Middle East. There is good reason why OPEC cut production, they are hoping to jack up prices. It failed because a good chunk of our oil now comes from the Canadian tar sands and as long as the price stays at a healthy level ($60-$70 barrel), then that will continue to be our source. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |
