So, I thought there was a topic about TV's, but I can't find it. Fiance and I are looking to get an HDTV here pretty soon and I want some recommendations. We don't really want (or need) bigger than 36", so please don't recommend anything bigger than that.
Mainly, we're looking for something to make our games look better and to make our movie watching experience awesome. So, any recommendations/suggestions? -------------------- ![]() |

Get a Samsung or Toshiba LCD. Make sure it displays 1080p. Many of them will say 1080p on them because they accept a 1080p signal, but that's decieving IMHO. To make sure it does true 1080p, look for it to say 1920x1080 resolution. If you want to make your movie watching experience awesome, grab a blu-ray player while you're at it

I thought you knew I had a PS3 =P Also, I'm not sure 36" TV's readily come in 1080p... -------------------- ![]() |

oh cool, didn't realize you already had a PS3.
walmart sells samsungs don't they? if not, vizio is pretty good for the price. if you're watching blu-rays, man, do everything in your power to go 1080p. i'm sure there are some 36" that have it, they just might not be at walmart. if not, trust me it'd be worth it to go to 40" or so to get it. especially if you're getting a vizio with a walmart discount. |

I'll second Samsungs. For the size you plan on buying, there isn't much of a difference between 720p and 1080p in terms of picture quality. Only when you get in to larger screens (40" or more) is there a noticeable difference. And I'm quoting a Best Buy salesman on this, so I really doubt he has any reason to lie. Plus, the difference is about $150. Imagine how many more months of WoW you could buy with that

If you really want to support Walmart, buy the Ilo.
And before you give me shit for the Ilo, I got my 42" for $500 from walmart, and it's a really nice television. There is very little difference in picture quality, a difference you could only possibly tell by sticking it side by side to one of the $4000 televisions. It was a really good value buy. -------------------- ![]() |

The iLo brand is made by Funai, who also makes Emerson, Sylvania, and Symphonic. It is not HD though. Not giving FW "shit", just saying. I personally have a 36" Symphonic 720p in my bedroom and it looks great.

Again, no iLo at my walmart, so that's a moot point.
Upon further reading, this iLo you linked isn't sold online... or in stores... -------------------- ![]() |

Yeah. I wasn't linking for you to buy; just to show an example of one in Billy's defense. I did find it odd that the television wasn't sold anywhere, but there were others when I googled "HD iLo". I just picked the first one that came up.

Just be careful with some of those brands as they may say something which makes them sound like they are HD but really aren't. As said before, your real indicator is to look for the resolution. IMHO you're getting it at walmart to use your discount you're better off spending a few extra bucks and getting the vizio.
one of these two would be pretty kick ass: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8586330 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5684931 |

Is this a pre-wedding gift you guys are being offered or something? I thought just the other day you were complaining about a lack of funds... like for food.

The lack of funds for food was exaggeration. But, we've been saving up money for this occasion as well as Shellana having some extra money left over from her trip to England, so we're getting a TV. -------------------- ![]() |

Where do iyou find the calibration settings? i have a 32 Vizio model#:VX32LHDTV10A The best way to go about finding them for any TV, go to avsforum.com, search on your model number to find the specific thread for your model. remove letters at the end one at a time if you don't find any thread, many of the threads are shared for multiple versions of the same model. or if some numbers for your model correspond to the size, replace them with xx. i.e. mine is a Samsung HLS6187w, but the thread is HLSxx87 (as the 61 is the size, and it's available in 50, 57, 61, 67"). The threads will usually be titled "official <manufacturer> <model> thread", i.e the one for yours is "Official Vizio VX32L Thread". Once you find the thread, search within it for "calibration settings" and you'll usually find at least a few posts where either the professional calibrators or some "power users" have posted theirs. They're not the end all be all, but a good place to start. Once you change the settings, give it some time to see how you like it, and try different lighting scenarios (regular TV watching, low light for movies, etc). You will most likely find it a little dimmer, but with a much nicer picture. Most TVs come with the brightness & contrast set way too high and it ends up blurring the image a little. Manufacturers set these values higher from the factory because it helps sell their TVs (i.e. trying to look brighter than the others, in an already bright retail store). There is also usually some type of proprietary processing the manufacturer puts in there to further "enhance" the image, which usually sucks (most calibrated settings have these turned off if possible). Anyhow, most who try out the calibrated settings see a night and day difference in picture quality over the factory settings. I know it was that way with my three and several friend's HDTVs. here's one I found for yours: backlight: 55 brightness: 57 contrast: 45 color:40 tint: 3 sharpness:3 color temp: red: 130 green: 120 blue: 105 DNR: medium Black level Extender: ON White Peak limiter: ON CTI: ON Flesh tone: OFF Adeptive luma: ON DCR: OFF |

So, another quick question. We got a 37" Vizio (cost about 670 after my discount). It says it's 720p but when I switch to my PS3 it says that it's 1080p... does that mean it's reading that the PS3 can output 1080p or that the TV is actually doing 1080p?

The TV "accepts" 1080p and then down converts it. Still looks killer though right?
