What are the best ways to maximize p2p security/privacy these days?
Also, I recently got Cox cable and it would appear that using the router I normally use with my connections appears to break the internet. I've read a bit about this issue, and am not certain what to do. Albeit, this is relatively little information to diagnose the problem, I find myself a bit frustrated that this would happen. Router is a Linksys router with fully updated firmware. -------------------- ![]() |

Ah, nah, I mean I've tried plugging two different routers inline and the both shut down the internet, even though my system is sending and receiving packets. Rather odd.

Does it happen all the time or does it work for a little while and then quit?
If it works and then quits, you probably need to cap the number of peers you're connecting to via bittorrent. What you have to understand is that when you download a torrent, you can easily connect to literally hundreds of peers in a few seconds. Since the router can only handle so many connections at once, you'll probably notice that the connection will die off. If it's happening all the time, my guess is that the router would be misconfigured. Since it's Cox, you want to make sure it's configured to get your IP address automatically. You may want to call Linksys and figure out the best way to configure it. Cox will probably be less than helpful about it since they want you to buy their home networking solution (if they're like most ISPs). -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! I had the cable company here (Grande Communications) tell me the other day that they I only pay for one connection so if a router isn't splitting that connection, they won't do anything about it. The internet was being retarded. I could get internet on my laptop. Or I could get internet on the desktop. But I couldn't get it on both simultaneously. It finally stopped being stupid and started working again but still... What the fuck kind of customer service says that? Who pays for multiple connections for internet in one home? NOBODY. That's who.

That's weird, I've always gotten awesome customer service from Grande. Were they just saying they couldn't support router troubleshooting since it wasn't their equipment?

No, because the router was working. They were saying that their service only provides one connection and if it doesn't split with use of a router than they don't care. I usually have great customer service with them too. Their connection has been pissing me off lately though.

You probably just got an idiot person, just try calling back a few times or going up the management chain or something. A router doesn't "split" your connection, it.... drumroll.... ROUTES the connection. You're still only using one connection to the outside.

Any router issues, I would suggest resetting the router to factory first, then going from there.

do you have both wired and wireless computers that won't work? (and you're sure plugging a PC directly into the cable modem works?)

Random thought... when you first got Cox, did you initially plug your computer directly into the modem? If so, you may need to set your router to clone your comp's MAC address. I had that problem once.

Go ahead and ditch Cox. Cable internet connections have static IP addresses, unless you want to pay extra for up to 6(well, 6 with Comcast here in CO, but I'm sure there's some sort of low limit.) I had a problem with Cox a few years back, they said that Paramount e-mailed them that I was sharing some movie and if it happened two more times that they would permanently disconnect my service.

They used to (and probably still do) lock onto a single MAC address, so whatever it sees first is what gets associated with your account/IP. You can call them and have them change it or unlock it completely, but the easy work-around is just to have the router clone it. -------------------- |

Cable internet connections don't have static IP addresses by default. If you want a static IP you can pay extra to get it, but your standard connection is not static. It may appear that way because you'll keep the same IP for a while, but it's not. You got caught and they just went through their database and matched the IP to your account at the time. |

I had that problem once. I've had to do this before too. It also could be that it wants you to enter the dns server manually (it should give it to you if you type "ipconfig /all" in the cmd box, just a thought. -------------------- Southern Rock, beer and bears!

That's probably the case, because I had the same IP address for the year that I lived at that house so it seemed like it was static. Cox had cut off the service after about 9 months of downloading. I got dsl after I moved, and I've had it for nearly 2 years now. During that time I've downloaded over 900GB of data, and haven't had any problems. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

Yeah, when I had DSL in Lubbock, my ip would change like 4 or 5 times a day. It was annoying as shit because the internet would cut out for a bit, but we downloaded so much shit with that service that I didn't mind the constant ip changes. I'm talkin' we probably downloaded a good 100 GB of movies and music in the 4 or 5 months that we had it. I don't download stuff anymore because I have cable internet, and it's honestly too risky these days. My husband just buys all the cd's he wants, and I occasionally get something, but not often. We have Netflix to watch the movies we want to watch. In desperation, I downloaded keygens for Adobe software a while back, but I deleted the programs. I had a trial version that was good for 30 days, and it expired like 2 weeks before my final publication design project was due. I wasn't going to spend god knows how much buying the programs. Adobe is stupid. Their trial versions are full versions. When the trial expires, it asks you if you have a product key. All you have to do is find a keygen generator, type in the code and you have a full copy without having to worry about getting a good connection on a torrent to download the product. Very stupid IMO, but whatever.

if you have an IP that changes a lot, go sign up at http://www.dyndns.com . It's a free service, and it will have a small app you can run either in the tray or as a background service, that will keep your IP associated with the domain of your choice. I.e. you can choose from stuff like: JessicaLoveBigCock.cooldns.net. there's a huge list of domains to choose from too. (obviously only useful if you have services where you log in to your home network remotely)

It's just a list of IP addresses from sources you don't want to be connecting to your computer. PeerGuardian is a program that will ban connections from that list of IP's. Don't know what program you use, but it's built in and for me it's under options and security. It accepts filter files and whatever format peerguradian is in. Google "ipfilter.dat".
