There are rumors that we'll see a MacBook with no wires (charges using inductive charging) and possibly an ultraportable (crossing my fingers).

What are your predictions?

I've been wondering about this....why not release a 2 or 4 gb iphone and slash the price $50 or $100? I've yet to find a use for 8 gigs worth of storage space. I already have an 80 gb Ipod, so I won't be putting any mp3's on there. Furthermore, I have youtube so I can listen to any song I want. I mean I store numbers, email addresses, business stuff, and I have about 60 photos, but I doubt I'll ever get anywhere near filling the hd up

You ever seen a Sonicare toothbrush? They have a charging base plugged into the wall, but there are no open electric contacts on it or the brush. Downside is it's slow... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductive_charging

Yeah I've seen them, just thought I would be a little fecitious when someone explained it and how there's still a cord smile.gif. Makes sense for a toothbrush or remote control or something, but not for a laptop IMO. It'd need to at least have the option of a regular type plug in.

Figured.

Yeah, there's a cord, but it's the first step towards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiTricity

It could also potentially reduce the risk of shorting out a laptop (spilling water on the desk, etc.)

I understand, just don't see it as a good thing for a laptop. 9 times out of 10 when I'm on my laptop or see others on theirs, they're sitting on the couch or something with the laptop in... their....... lap. It would work good for those who leave their laptop on the desk all the time, but then again how would you be tripping over the cord and such if you did that?

No worries though, they'll sell lots of iPower cables.

Inductive charging is good for items in the bathroom and kitchen, where risk of water getting on them is high, but I think the slow charge rate makes it a little undesirable for most applications. Unless charging speeds have increased? I know my Sonicare, for instance, takes about a full day to charge up... and that's with a pretty small battery.

new iphone features

Maps with locations, webclips, customizable home screens, SMS multiple people at once, chapters, subtitles, and language support in video, and lyrics support in audio

when iphone first came out they had a 4GB and 8GB version. i have the 4GB. i've never filled it up.
8GM now cost what the 4GB used to cost.

Probably for the best. I always end up accidentally mass texting a bunch of people who don't want to talk to me as much as I don't want to talk to them

I've got Gizmodo, Macworld, and Engadget up.

Macworld is a little slower to update.

The rental time once you start watching is 24 hrs.

Borrowing a computer on the network for the optical drive? yes.

3 lbs.
1.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
80GB HD
802.11n
Bluetooth 2.1

$1799

If I buy one I will probably spring for the 64GB SSD.

OK, i was all wowed by the Macbook Air until I saw the specs.....then I became unimpressed. Its pretty and thin, but that's about it. I am happy with my Black Macbook 2.2 Ghz

I'm willing to sacrifice Ghz for portability, especially when I sometimes travel with two laptops.

Same way here... I never understood people's need for super high performance laptops... seems like kinda an oxymoron... like when you see those 4x4 crew cab dually pickups that are slammed.

Considering most software can be downloaded it doesn't matter to me.

The only time I've ever used my optical drive was to install XCode and I've had my computer a year and a half.

There is an external optical drive available, just like for the Sonys.

Well let me rephrase that... it would suck ass for me, as one of my laptop's primary uses is to watch DVDs while on trips and such. It just seems cheesy to me to remove the optical drive (still a vital device for a lot of people) just to make the thing an extra 1/4" thinner.

Well let me rephrase that... it would suck ass for me, as one of my laptop's primary uses is to watch DVDs while on trips and such. It just seems cheesy to me to remove the optical drive (still a vital device for a lot of people) just to make the thing an extra 1/4" thinner.

True, for a lot of people the compromise isn't worth it. I don't use my laptop to watch DVDs (I usually watch a few episodes of TV shows from BitTorrent).

Downsides to Macbook Air:
1. No user-replacable battery. Not the end of the world, for sure, but a nuisance. Shades of the user-inaccessible iPhone battery commotion here.
2. Recessed USB slot will hinder certain peripherals. Get ready for a cottage industry of adapters to appear (much like those for the iPhone's headphone jack). Plus, there's only one.
3. No Firewire port.

These two things bother me the most, especially the battery.

The iPhones are selling in Germany, the UK, and I think they may have a contract in France and Denmark.

I more than likely won't buy one.

I feel Apple would have done much better with a 12" Macbook Pro like their old 12" Powerbook.

I went into Apple Store yesterday because I had a question about the iPhone update and memory, and the girl who was helping me was all touting how she had ordered one (the upper level model)....and SEVERAL other Apple employees were like, "you're just stupid." LOL How on earth an Apple Store employee can afford one, I don't know unless her mommy and daddy pay for things and the job is just for appearances.

I was arguing with her that it's just not worth the money.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would just write here that I've been contemplating an iPhone for a while. My only reservation is the possibility that Apple will release one with 3G and GPS at the next expo.

It fits my needs perfectly, good IMAP support (I don't care about Exchange), lightweight, ability to watch a TV show or two without pulling out my computer (and with more and more airlines installing iPod hookups this feature gets more important), etc.

The new Apple Airport's ability to sync and backup iPhone data over 802.11n is another selling point as I can have all of my backups in a central location (and backed up again).

the 3g version is coming, there's pretty hard proof already. I couldn't cite a source off the top of my head, but a quick search on digg or any of the mac-zealot sites should yield what you desire.

QUOTE (Hartmann @ Jan 22 2008, 08:34 AM) *

That new feature that they released with the latest update works pretty well. It isnt an EXACT pinpoint, but everytime I've used it for directions and used the pin-pointing as my start it hasn't given me wrong directions.

really the only thing that has impressed me so far is the iphone...

i wouldn't want such a small thin laptop because of the fear i might snap it in half....ALTHOUGH...i like the direction this is going
