What would you recommend for a good laptop computer? I'm looking to buy one, but don't know what to get. I don't need anything crazy gaming-powerful (I have a desktop rig for that), but I don't want a P.O.S. either. I'm thinking a MacBook would be nice, but Dell has good value, too.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm thinking strongly of getting a Macbook Pro, but I'm not 100% positive yet.

Nope, I didn't. I asked about laptops, but I haven't actually gotten one yet.

You lose 1000 internet cool points for a lack of originality.

Moving on... people made some suggestions here when I asked: http://www.techsans.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4387. Toshiba seemed to be the consensus if you were looking for a Windows laptop.

I find that most of the Toshiba laptops end up weighing like 10 lbs LOL I owned one my last year at tech, and god it was heavy.

My advice: go with the 1299 white macbook. It's the exact same thing as the black one but is white and costs $200 less (and I think it has a little less hard drive space). Unless of course you're just deadset on getting black. (it is pretty cool that it doesn't show fingerprints and dirt as much)

So, I am planning on taking the plunge on Sunday morning! And I am buying it at Best Buy so I can get DOUBLE reward zone points, and earn a $30 gift card. That should pay for a few little accessories!

One more bit of advice: If you're going to get an extended warranty, get AppleCare, not Best Buy's plan. It's a lot cheaper and it covers more. Not to mention that you'll be able to take it to any Apple Authorized Service Provider instead of Best Buy.

Yep, that's the plan. I am gonna wait a month or two and go back to an Apple Store and buy the Applecare since I can buy it anytime within the first year.

I have an iBook and it's ok. I'd prefer to have a Dell or something along those lines with windows.

Although I would not mind have MacBook pro.

Yeah, still though. I want a laptop that kicks ass as a media/gaming machine and also for data analysis and writing papers. Macs work for the latter scenario. I haven't bought any computer games in a while though, so I don't know if they are expanding out of just the PC realm of install.

Yeah, I think they are working on making Macs more compatible with PC stuff.....that's why Leopard comes with Bootcamp.

Getting a MacBook Pro with Vista is probably one of the best options in that regard. I do also know that Toshiba has a decent gaming laptop. I'm sure Dell has something pretty nice considering they own alienware, but I haven't looked much at their lineup.

I think Apple requires Best Buy to sell you AppleCare if they carry their computers. Don't be surprised if they try to talk you out of it though.

with tax, $1,623.

EDIT: And I will end up putting another $250 into it for the AppleCare (but that wont be for a few months), and next month I am gonna spend the $150 to upgrade it to 4 GB RAM (Apple charges $300 for 2 GB, bastards).
