QUOTE AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died after being struck by a train, officials said. Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking Monday near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said. This is something i would have though could only come from family guy or south park... but it's actually true -------------------- |

QUOTE (basschick @ Mar 15 2006, 01:01 AM) why in god's name was a deaf person walking on the tracks anyway? Good question. Better question - what kind of people are usually found walking on railroad tracks? What link does she have to them? Best question - Who's Miss Texas now? -------------------- Spam? It was a cell phone fatality!
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/03/15/miss.deaf.texas/index.html QUOTE (CNN) -- Deaf beauty contest winner Tara McAvoy was walking along the railroad tracks from her Austin, Texas, home to her mother's workplace, text-messaging family and friends, when a train struck her, according to the Austin Police Department. She was actually walking beside the tracks (still stupidly close), but got hit by the snowplow. To answer James' question, I imagine that the runner-up from the Miss Deaf Texas competition will take this girl's place in the national competition. ok. so here are my thoughts on this whole thing. Doesnt the ground around the tracks vibrate when a train is coming? I mean, of all people, you would think a deaf or blind person could feel this and would know to get out of the way.

Eh, people get wrapped up in the weirdest stuff sometimes. Still, it was dumb of her to be walking that close to the tracks without paying attention to her surroundings.

I lived next to train tracks for years and while I was never that close to feel, i know people that were. |

I don't remember feeling the ground shake when I was walking next to moving trains? Only reason I said it. Probably depends on where the track was built and how it was built. In other words, certain materials might dampen it so much as to virtually eliminate the shaking.

I know that some people who are deaf wear hearing aids so that they can hear things like Sirens and other important sounds, but they are still unable to hear any voices.
