aw disappointing. i figured he was actually doing most of his stuff alone. he does say on the show that the camera crew is only there for life and death situations.

but i saw that episode with the horses, that was totally fake. you wouldnt be able to walk up to a wild horse especially after the herd ran off and it would rarely be alone. at the time i figured he wandered into someones ranch

meh, yet another thread where Impala demonstrates his ability to be a raging douche.

/on topic - Meh, I figured a lot of it was this way. Still a fun show to watch with some interesting tips.

you certainly need surviving skills to climb mt everst other than "mounting climbing stuff". in addition to what he was trained in the military. hes a perfect candidate for a show like that. if hes taught some of the stuff thats cool he is still a certainly interesting and dynamic host to present the information

this is one of your problems impala. your reasoning stops at black and white. if he knows how to climb mount everest and survive. plus his military background than he has some surviving skills. these skills he can apply to nearly anyplace on earth.

Or how about this comment...
QUOTE
He bit the head off a snake and ate it. He caught a living snake, put its tail in his mouth, bit the head off, and swallowed. He urinated on a tshirt then wore it around his face for a solid day in the desert. He found a dead zebra in Africa, cut chunks off of it with a knife and ate it raw. Later that day he was dehydrated so he squeezed water out of elephant dung and drank it. HE DRANK ELEPHANT DUNG WATER. He cooked and ate a turtle. He's climbed up and down water falls, swam in freezing waters, pulled himself out of quicksand (twice), slept in a tree house in the everglades (I live close to the everglades, I don't think theres any motels where he was at), dived into back breaking waves to retrieve an empty water bottle, and drank his own urine. Who cares if he spends the night in a hotel after that? Seriously, if you're going to be upset with the program because he isn't actually spending subzero nights in snow caves that he digs you're missing the point. ELEPHANT DUNG WATER!

i'm sure he has some good survival skills, but his show was staged and purposefully over the top just to get ratings.

bottom line, survivor man > man vs wild

People say Survivor Man is boring but I think it is much more interesting than Man vs. Wild...

An example of why I like SM more than MvW is there are multiple SM episodes where survival techniques are actually shown and the guy talks about the different options if something he was doing wasn't available. The MvW just builds a raft out of logs and vines that he turned into rope... Yeah, right, like any of us are going to forge a river on something we put together from instructions on TV. No, we'd walk down the river and look for other ways to cross.

You just have to lash it and secure it with a knot...if you don't trust your knot of choice, make many knots, but I think the clove hitch is one used for securing in something like that. Tada, raft made.

My opinion still stands that I'd rather trust Bear to save me than a guy that looks like a high school Home Economics teacher. The purpose of the show is to teach you to get out of these dangerous places, and Bear does that.

he does that after a restful night in a fancy hotel

even so, i would still trust bear to get out of a bad situation; however, i'd trust survivorman to survive for an extended period of time (such as when i need to hide out after bombing that planned parenthood clinic).

regarding the linked post: If these allegations are true, then some of it isn't "staged," he just shows you how to build a shelter or boat or whatever, but doesn't stay in the shelter sometimes I guess. The majority of the shit he does on camera though is still impressive.

bear will eat a bug..... i had friends in elemetary who would do that.

survivorman will make something tasty out of leaves.

anyone can cram random shit in their mouth to survive.... the key to survival skills is how comfrtably you can survive with as little aid as possible. so, survivorman wins.

but, the fact he stays in a hotel doesn't mean he knows any less about survival, he shows you how to do it, knows how to do it. big deal

How can my opinion be "wrong?" I tried watching Survivorman the other day and he was just sitting out on a raft on the ocean. Great tv! Then the weather was so bad that they had to pull him in or he could risk dying. So how is that different from Bear's situation?

Bear shows people how to build shelter and sleep in it, doesn't mean he has to do it every time. I can see the point of throwing all the raft pieces around there. By "discovering" these pieces, he has an opportunity to show people how to make a raft if they happen upon materials to do such. Otherwise he'd just do like Survivorman and say "If there was some wood around here then you could make a boat, but I don't have wood so I'm not going to show you how."

The whole point of the other thread was who is the bigger badass, which Bear clearly won. You tried to steer it toward "who would you trust more in survival situations?" which I believe Bear also won. The subject was not "Which TV show is 100% accurate in its portrayal of events?" I think if we argued which TV show is more entertaining, Bear would STILL win. I can guarantee you that Les has some tricks up his sleeve that he doesn't mention on camera, and to not think so is naive. Just admit it, Survivorman is a Canadian, and by definition he's lame.

QUOTE
One example of how the voice-over changes things is that in one episode, Bear claims to have caught a rabbit in his trap and he eats it. But the voice-over reveals that the crew caught it for him. Bear says in the new voice-over, "My trap didn't catch anything overnight, but I've been brought a rabbit to tell you what to do if you're luckier than me."

i've been watching survivorman since man vs. wild hasn't been shown in a while.
not a bad show either.
a little frustrating at times when he wears the helmet camera and everything is shaking, and he's got too big of an ego about that damn harmonica.
but overall, good show

DAMMIT, I haven't seen much of the new season!

I did see the Alaska one with the shelter burning incident. I laughed but he was able to fix it back up.

Did anyone see the Survivorman "how it's made" episode?

It was cool. He meets with local guides to learn the area, the plants, the animals, etc. so he doesn't die, then they pick out an exact location and try to make it as remote as possible. On one episode outtake they showed boats in an Alaskan harbor where fisherman had come to look for salmon and another one they showed where he ran into snowmobilers asking if he needed a ride.

The Amazon jungle one was pretty freaking sweet as well.

Yeah, I saw that episode. Good stuff.

I need to buy both Survivorman and Man vs. Wild on DVD.
