Who the fuck wants an iPhone? Here's a list of stuff it DOESN'T HAVE.

1. Songs as Ringtones
2. Games
3. Any flash support
4. Instant Messaging
5. Picture messages (MMS)
6. Video recording
7. Voice recognition or voice dialing
8. Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
9. One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)
10. 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
11. GPS
12. A real keyboard
13. Removable battery
14. Expandable Storage
15. Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/what-the-...have-272571.php

Apple and the iPhone release is analogous to Sony and the PS3. Sony announced that they could release a total piece of shit that doesn't even play games, call it a PS3, and still sell millions because of fanbois. Apple is releasing a steaming pile of shit and all the fanbois are going crazy over it. Same scenario, different company/product.

I can say that a lot of people will buy one because it's the "cool" thing to do but I'll let those people be my test guinea pigs, just like the first buyers of the RAZR.

Yea, everything except the iPod that apple makes is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced and waaaaaaaaaay over hyped. I still don't understand why anyone would buy a macbook for the low price of 1600$ when you can get a laptop with similar hardware for 700$ and put linux on it and have way more eye candy and the same amount of crashing. And could you believe that news agencies were actually covering the release of a phone?

What are you basing your # of crashes research on? My MacBook Pro has crashed one time since I bought it a year ago and I hardly turn it off. And, the reason it crashed was because I installed something that expressly said "don't install on a MBP" but since I am hard headed I did it anyway.

"The iPhone's battery is apparently soldered on inside the device and cannot be swapped out by the owner like most other cell phones.

Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Hakes said Thursday the company posted the battery replacement details on its Web site last Friday after the product went on sale.

Users would have to submit their iPhone to Apple for battery service. The service will cost users $79, plus $6.95 for shipping, and will take three business days.

The procedure is similar to the one it has for the company's best-selling iPod players, but because some users will not want to live without their cell phones, Apple is also offering a loaner iPhone for $29 while the gadget is under repair." ~ From the above link

so about $115 on top of the original price (which is still way too much for a damn phone).

your really getting a good value there dry.gif

I saw a hippie on the elevator with an iPhone this morning... If I have to be associated with that group of people, I won't buy one.

He was decked out in hemp sandals and shorts and looked like he hadn't showered in weeks.

When I first saw him, this thought crossed my mind... but as soon as I stepped on the elevator I just about threw up.

just got mine in and got it working.
activation through itunes was a breeze. i wish all phone activation was as easy.
my first impressions are positive. it's the prefect size. any bigger and it would be bulky. any smaller and it would be clumsy.
the touch screen works smoothly, with the exception of fingerprints.
the texting keyboard is a bit small but easy to use and i've had probably about 90% success rate. i think i type faster on it than i did on my blackberry pearl. i'll get better with practice.
i haven't had a chance to put pictures, videos, or music on it yet. but the youtube, weather, stocks, and maps app work flawlessly.
the safari internet is nice. the edge network is a bit slow, but withstandable. i don't browse the net much on my phone anyway.
one thing is i can't seem to figure out how to turn the phone to all vibrate. i'm sure there's a way, i'm just being retarded.
overall... A-

i have the cingular 8125, the touch screen dirtiness is not really a big deal, i guess maybe if you are particularly greasy . . .

i like it because of the wifi-ness, and it only cost me 75-ish. i mean, maybe my phone is not as cool and it does not have a pretty gui and it can only hold 2gigs but i think it is much better than the iphone.

best phone i've ever had. i now type faster texting than i did on my blackberry pearl.
the smart recognition feature of the characters works flawlessly. i could type a word that looks something like this: jkdfabeel;o and the feature will suggest the right word.
i don't like that i can't send texts to multiple people and that there is no MMS.
the internet is a little slow, but being able to view the real internet, and not some scaled down version is great. plus it's the only phone i've been able to access myspace on.
the special attention to details is great. the way it syncs via itunes. the way a call comes in when i'm listening to music. just the little things are awesome.
i'm scared i'm going to drop it, but, so far, so good.

oh and the camera takes better photos than my canon.
although there is no zoom or flash.

a guy here in the office got an iphone and i messed around with it. pretty awesome interface. i just don't like that the thing is so locked down. it also doesn't seem to do anything my windows mobile 5 phone cant do. he says he can't get it to work with our exchange server, and i really don't like that fact that you can't just plug it into your comp and see it as a drive and browse the files that way.

i gotta give em credit though, the interface is very nice.

I sat in the Apple store for about an hour with my Treo out and the iPhone on display... I did some different things, trying to see how the interface compared.

I loved the scrolling with my finger but noticed that different screens reacted differently to the scroll. Also, I think anything should be able to go into landscape mode, not just the things that Apple has specified.

The keyboard is usable but again, landscape mode would be nice so that I could use a larger keyboard.

I played around with an iPhone for about an hour a couple days ago. Have to say, I was surpisingly impressed. I didnt think the phone was going to function so well. The touch screen is amazing. As others have said, even though the keyboard is small, it still predicts pretty accurately what you trying to hit. I think its a little complicated for everyday use though.... but perhaps thats because Im not much of a pda person. There were a few little things I did not like, but all in all I had a good first impression of it. Dont think I would ever buy one though. Id be afraid of dropping it. Additionally, Im still skeptical of the long-run performance of the phone. Like how well will the phone hold up after a year or two?

I have a question about the visual voicemail... Since you can technically fill up your inbox and there is no auto-deletion of messages, is there a way to "archive" old messages through iTunes? Like pull a few of the voicemails off of the phone and put them on your computer to make room?

i like it because of the wifi-ness, and it only cost me 75-ish. i mean, maybe my phone is not as cool and it does not have a pretty gui and it can only hold 2gigs but i think it is much better than the iphone.

/shrug

the 8125 can take high-capacity SD cards, I think they make 4gb right now. Also, you don't have to type with the screen, so less smudging.

QUOTE (cmac @ Jul 11 2007, 02:23 PM) *
best phone i've ever had. i now type faster texting than i did on my blackberry pearl.
the smart recognition feature of the characters works flawlessly. i could type a word that looks something like this: jkdfabeel;o and the feature will suggest the right word.
i don't like that i can't send texts to multiple people and that there is no MMS.
the internet is a little slow, but being able to view the real internet, and not some scaled down version is great. plus it's the only phone i've been able to access myspace on.
the special attention to details is great. the way it syncs via itunes. the way a call comes in when i'm listening to music. just the little things are awesome.
i'm scared i'm going to drop it, but, so far, so good.

oh and the camera takes better photos than my canon.
although there is no zoom or flash.

What the fuck is all this "real internet" bullshit I keep hearing about? Every smartphone/WM device has been able to do this for years, and I heard someone saying the other day that the iphone didn't even support fucking JAVA. JAVA!

besides, with EDGE's slow-ass speeds compared to EVDO Rev. A, you might be better off with a condensed/mobile version of certain sites anyways.

it displays a web page just like it would on an actual computer. not a css-less list bullet form of a web page like every other phone. myspace is a good example. much easier to read, especially having such a big screen.
EDGE isn't that big of a deal. it's never slow for me and using the faster connection just uses more battery , which is why Jobs decided not to use it. I use the WiFi a lot anyway.

well from playin around w/my coworker's iphone, i found out pretty quick most of the little 'features' on the main screen are just mobile websites in disguise. i.e. the youtube button just goes to this mobile site. http://m.youtube.com/?warned=yes

and major BS on a faster network costing you more battery. gimme a freakin break. your wifi radio costs you way more battery than any cell radio.

YouTube is not just a link to the mobile page. It's a specialized app that has all the videos in H.264 format for faster viewing on the phone.

battery life is reduced 23% using 3G vs EDGE, and using WiFi actually makes the battery life last longer.

Css-less bullet form of a web page? what the fuck are you talking about? Windows mobile has been able to render CSS for YEARS. You can get the full page of any page, I have no idea what this "every other phone" bullshit is.

You bought a SMARTPHONE. (a shitty one, but that's what it is.) Smartphones have had full internet access for fucking EONS. (With the possible exception of blackberrys, i'm not sure on that one but it doesn't really matter because blackberrys suck even more)

As far as you being BFF's with steve jobs and reading his diary, perusing his innermost thoughts on battery design, i'm calling load of shit. It shouldn't be an issue anyways, my phone uses 3G and the battery is MORE than sufficient. Oh, and it's REMOVEABLE.

This is why lots of EE's hate that CS majors don't understand their systems. Wifi has more bandwidth because the distances are shorter. Signal loss is cubed function in the best case in non-directional antennas. The reason 3G and EDGE use more power is that each bit takes bukos power to run when compared to any of the wifi schemes.

ok mr pompus ass EE genius, tell me why wifi drains the shit out of my cell phone's battery vs the sprint cell network. why would wifi be more battery draining with one system and less battery draining on another? and the distances aren't the only difference between the two, come on. I don't get 54 Mbps just because I'm parked next to the cell tower.

It's funny that some of us say cmac is stupid for "wasting" so much money on a phone when a lot of us have spent similar amounts on our own.

Well the question wasn't directed at you but what phone do you have?

any phone that supports 3gp video can do it. In fact, it's actually a bit MORE of a hassle to get it going on a WM phone (although simple after you get it working) than a normal handset (ie, a sprint fusic, or any decently new phone that has come out in the last year. Even most newer razrs can do it.)

yeah hartmann, you do have a point. I spent 200 on the fusic when I got it. I like the gps and using opera mini, but it sucks for battery life.

Chuck, what are you doing with the phones during each mode is the big question. I was just arguing power per bit. Lot more bandwidth comes more clock cycles.

i'd love to know who has spent some time with an iphone too. not just saw it in a store, spent two seconds with it and close-mindly said this sucks.

impala has obviously. who else?

i question if microsoft made the device if opinions would be totally different.

QUOTE

what do you believe will be different about this? "wirelessly stream" is the same thing as when you look at it from the web page... whether it's an application or a browser, all you're doing is streaming the content from their server...

QUOTE
iPhone will be the first mobile device to use the H.264-encoded videos.

this is absolutely false. the H.264 as they seem to have coined as a buzz word recently is simply referring to MPEG-4, which has been around for almost 5 years. MPEG-4 viewers have been available for windows CE and WM5 devices for a long time. I personally have had MPEG-4 videos on my phone since I got it last year. Windows media player does not natively play them, but them stating that the iphone is the first mobile device to play them is wrong.

QUOTE
With its advanced Safari browser, iPhone lets you see web pages the way they were designed to be seen, then easily zoom in by simply tapping on the multi-touch display with your finger.

yes, if you want to view full sized web pages, it is easier on the iphone. it's a bigger screen than most, and the zoom thing helps for sure. if you're connected through wifi it's a great browser. but any place where I don't have wifi, I'd much rather view the mobile version of the site (whether on an iphone or wm5 device).

QUOTE (cmac @ Aug 5 2007, 10:55 AM) *
from apple:
does your phone show techsans like you're looking at it right now? or is it some broken down ie version.

yes, albeit on a smaller screen. basically, if you took your browser on your computer and resized it so that it was about 320 pixels wide (really skinny). most phones have a mobile browser. this browser will show any web page, but common web sites like yahoo, google, weather sites, etc will have a mobile version, often without ads, less graphics, etc. some of them will look at your browser and automatically show you the mobile version of the site. imho this is a much better way, as most websites nowadays have a lot of unnecessary graphics, and if I'm viewing a site from my phone, I just want to get the score, see the radar, read my gmail, re-bid on the ebay item, etc.

QUOTE (cmac @ Aug 5 2007, 10:55 AM) *

I don't really use myspace much, but I use facebook some. they have a mobile site, m.facebook.com. while you could load theh full facebook site on your iphone, you'd probably still want to use the mobile site. it's way faster, fits the entire thing on your screen with no zooming, and presents a more compact, sensible page for a small screen interface.

QUOTE (cmac @ Aug 5 2007, 10:55 AM) *

i guess 'tremendously better experience' is pretty objective. take this site that I use every day for instance:
http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/

vs their mobile site:

http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/mobile/maps.aspx

now say you wanted to view this site on your iphone. the larger version is about 800px wide and a couple hundred KB, the smaller is about 200px wide and about 20KB. i'm not comparing or saying my phone is better or anything, but which site makes more sense to load? load the large one and zoom out, or just load the one designed to fit the screen and use up less space?

QUOTE (cmac @ Aug 5 2007, 10:55 AM) *
i had the blackberry pearl before the iphone and i loved it when i had it. now that i have the iphone, i see that the pearl's user interface was crap.

just because something new comes out, it doesn't mean the old one is crap. yes, the iphone's interface is very nice, but useability is what matters most to me. to be honest I rarely even look at my phone's screen. if I need to go to the transtar site while i'm in the truck, i press a button on my headset and say "open transtar", wait about 2 seconds and then look at the screen. if i'm going to listen to music on my phone, i don't really care to see all the album covers and flip through them, i just wanna start up a playlist.

I will say the one thing on the iphone I like the most, is the 'physics' behind its scrolling. the ability to scroll by swiping your finger across the screen is pretty nice.

overall i think the iphone is a great device. it's very useful for those who want to combine their ipod and phone into one piece, view web pages on the go, etc. it's just not for me. i prefer a device i can write software for, add other 3rd party software to, view whatever music/videos/media i want to. for windows mobile and to an extent palm OS, you can find a huge base of people developing software, games, utilities, even home brewed ROMs to replace the entire OS. the "pocket pc" devices are essentially just that, a tiny PC, much of their hardware and programming is just a smaller, miniaturized version of what sits on your desk. the iphone seems to be more of a one off device designed from scratch.

They have single IC solutions for wifi minus the power amp. The power amp (it takes a weak signal generated from the device and makes it much more powerful, usually measured in dB gain. On a cell radio, it only pings the tower on occasion. During data transfer and phone audio, the thing is going constantly. During wifi access, the 802.11 power amp is going constantly. Old cell phones (and i think CDMA based) run at 1 watt RF transmission power. The amps used are usually class A's and only about 50% power efficient. 802.11 uses around 100 mW on a laptop, and probably less on a PDA/Iphone. I can't give real numbers, but that is the reasoning behind it.

is that 100mW constant for 802.11? and yeah the pings to the tower are by default every 3-5 seconds i believe. some people complain that theirs is set from the factory too high and sometimes their phone doesn't even ring before their voicemail picks up. the WM5 phones have some hacks you can do to lower that time (at the cost of some battery of course).

impala, you've posted mobile versions of sites. Cmac's point is that he sees full blown sites (including regular ole Facebook.com). I am still unable to view the NYT and WSJ on my Palm, but when using the iPhone I could.

you didn't read my entire post then. I understand that you can view the full blown site on the iphone, as you can on a WM5 phone (albeit squished). My point was, iphone or not, if you're on a slow cell network, why would you want to view the huge, slow loading ESPN.com, when you can load the mobile site so much faster and get to the info you want?

edit: on the suit.. LOL

is that 100mW constant for 802.11? and yeah the pings to the tower are by default every 3-5 seconds i believe. some people complain that theirs is set from the factory too high and sometimes their phone doesn't even ring before their voicemail picks up. the WM5 phones have some hacks you can do to lower that time (at the cost of some battery of course).

It would use that much whever transmitting bits. Same as when bits are transmitted using one of the cell bands, just at 1/10th the power. I am not sure about the exact power numbers and should be taken qualitatively.

right but most people use the wifi for stuff like email so there's typically some kind of socket "keepalive" message or email check running every few minutes, especially for these manager types we have that get every damn email in the company. i suppose that's why we see the battery usage go up with wifi in the non-iphone case. although it's not a huge deal for some because a lot of us just keep the thing in a dock while at work anyhow. no problem w/the iphone though as corp email doesn't work! tongue.gif

NEW YORK — A 17-year-old hacker has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

says there were other online people involved, but the kid is the one that went public.

this is the stupid thing on the kid's part:
QUOTE
The hack, which Hotz posted Thursday to his blog, is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software. It takes him about two hours to perform. Since the details are public, it seems likely that a small industry may spring up to buy U.S. iPhones, unlock them and send them overseas.

"That's exactly, like, what I don't want," Hotz said. "I don't want people making money off this."

...

On Thursday, he put the unlocked iPhone up for sale on eBay, where the price was above $2,000 midday today

damn you beat me to posting this...

the article I read said that the team isn't releasing the software yet.
maybe these are two separate teams? idk.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/24/iphone-...august-24-2007/

Edit:: Evidently this was two separate teams. The one I linked to said it could do it in a matter of minutes solely with software, and they are the ones trying to make a buck off of it.

put something techy out and tell geeks there is a limitation to it and it's only a matter of time before it's hacked.

Kinda glad I didn't buy an iPhone... the new iPod Touch was just announced. It's basically an iPhone without the phone. WiFi, browser, music, youtube, etc. but no phone. smile.gif I'll just replace my iPod with this (maybe).

I'm not saying that it's not a nice gesture.

But still, a $200 price drop 2 months after the iPhone's release would piss the hell out of me had I bought one initially. Yeah, it'll be blowjob swell for those that buy them now but Jobs gipped people for 2 months apparently.
Then again, I'm one of the last people left that uses a cell phone as that: a portable phone. No need for bells and whistles, just a good solid phone.

i guess i'm one of the few that doesn't care. i thought i was worth $500 when i bought it, and i still think it's worth $500 after owning it for two months. I only see the gift card as getting free money from apple.
people who are complaining are stupid.
