QUOTE MEXICAN TEACHERS IN AMERICAN SCHOOLS Guess who is teaming up with government schools in Utah? Mexico. Yep, you heard me right. Mexico and Utah signed an agreement called the Memorandum of Understanding on Education. You know what my understanding is? That kids shouldn't be sent to public schools in the first place. But I can guarantee that's not what this memo said. So what is their "understanding"? Hiring Mexican teachers. Why? Because 40% of students in Utah government schools speak Spanish. So instead of making the kids learn English ... we are just going to teach them in Spanish. Assimilation? Yeah, right. Your government wants to make sure that little Jose is comfortable in his second grade class. It doesn't want any "at risk" children to fall behind or feel left out. Never mind that they're essentially left behind when they graduate from these idiot government schools and still can't speak our language. Here's a lesson: parents, teach your kids English. If you don't know English, learn it. If you want to succeed and thrive in America, lean the language of America .... NORTH America ... and that language isn't Spanish. Another kicker in this little memorandum is that the "arrangement" required several staff trips to and from Mexico. Guess who was footing that bill. The taxpayers. Of course. Not to mention the fact that the Mexican teachers will have an orientation week funded by the Office of Education (aka. Taxpayers). The orientation includes finding housing. Knowing our government, that's probably on the taxpayers' dime as well. And the sub-headline is just priceless ... like they are trying to justify it to the public: "They will help Spanish speakers do better in school; no Utahn is being deprived of a job." There are so many things wrong with that statement. But that's government for you! http://boortz.com/nuze/index.html |

Wow. I can't believe the Utah teachers allowed that to happen.

Both the U.S. and Canada speak English (minus Quebec), and Mexico is usually grouped in with Central America. I don't see a problem with his statement.

And Central America is considered part of North America.

I consider North, Central, and South three distinct regions of Americas, along with 50% of the rest of the U.S. It's a question of semantics anyways. Discuss the content of the article and not his choice of words.

There are 7 continents.... If we are talking continents, then there is no Central America. If we are talking regions, then yes there is. Quit arguing about stupid shit, people

Regarding the content of the article, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that they're setting up separate Spanish-taught classes. I was talking about this with my boyfriend last night, though, and I came up with the idea of offering ESL classes in high-immigration areas. That way they can beef up the English skills of immigrant kiddos, but not segregate them in the main classes.

Whoa. ESL courses definitely have a purpose. If you take them out of the school, you probably won't have many kids going to them on their own, outside of school. Unless this isn't what you meant? But every school already has ESL courses, so I don't know what the idea you had is.
I certainly don't think you need a Spanish-speaker to teach the ESL when you have countries like Korea and China importing Americans to teach ESL to their children. Americans that don't necessarily need to speak Korean or Chinese. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

I meant putting the kids in ESL courses at the regular school in addition to their normal English-taught curriculum. I was unaware that ESL classes were offered frequently in primary and secondary schools

Ah. Yeah. ESL, by my understanding, is standard at every school, especially in the larger cities. Getting ESL certified is just an extra certification you append on to the standard certification. Kind of like Master Teacher in Reading or Master Teacher in Mathematics. To get the Supplemental Certification through Tech, you just have to take four extra courses, courses I imagine will count towards the continuing education requirement, to become ESL certified.

QUOTE Schwarzenegger to Immigrants: Avoid Spanish-Language Media Friday, June 15, 2007 SAN FRANCISCO  California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's remarks that immigrants should avoid Spanish-language media if they want to learn English quickly left some Hispanic journalists shaking their heads. "You've got to turn off the Spanish television set" and stay away from Spanish-language television, books and newspapers, the Republican governor said Wednesday night at the annual convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. "You're just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster." Schwarzenegger, who immigrated to the U.S. from Austria, was responding to a question about how Hispanic students can improve academic performance. The audience included many journalists who work for Spanish-language media outlets. "I know this sounds odd and this is the politically incorrect thing to say and I'm going to get myself in trouble," he said. "But I know that when I came to this country, I very rarely spoke German to anyone." Some members of the audience said they were surprised by Schwarzenegger's comments. "I'm sitting shaking my head not believing that someone would be so naive and out of it that he would say something like that," Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, said Thursday. Nogales said immigrants need Spanish-language media to stay informed and "function in this society." Pilar Marrero, the political editor for the Spanish-language newspaper La Opinion, chuckled at the governor's comments, saying many Hispanics did not have time to learn English. "They're too busy working," she said. Rafael Olmeda, president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, said most NAHJ members would agree with the governor's statements. "Most people I've spoken to walked away believing that he was trying to say that we must learn English to succeed in American society," Olmeda said. The governor's office said the statements were no different from what he has said before. In a 2006 editorial published in the San Jose Mercury News, Schwarzenegger said English-language immersion was the best way to learn the language. In October, the governor was criticized by Democrats when he said some Mexican immigrants "try to stay Mexican" when they come to the United States and urged them to learn English and U.S. history and "make an effort to become part of America. Schwarzenegger has garnered more Hispanic support than most Republican governors in the past two elections, despite some seemingly anti-immigration blunders  such as praising the Minutemen border militia group on a talk radio show. On Wednesday, Schwarzenegger also lauded President George W. Bush's push for immigration reform, saying the country has its first opportunity for change in decades. But he said the Senate's current immigration reform proposal, which failed last week, still needs more fine tuning so it can be enforced. Haha. Go Arnold! Tell 'em like it is. He's so right. I've heard the same thing from other foreigners, though none were of a Hispanic origin now that I think about it. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?
