Don't mean to open up a can of worms, but I thought this was interesting.. I'd never thought I'd hear prisoners wanting a death penalty, seems like it's borderline euthanasia.

Who cares what prisoners want?
And that maximum sentence of 30 years they have in the works is a bad idea. Kill someone at 20. Turn around, kill them again at 50. And you can even get one more in at 80 -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

maybe just me... but some people enjoy breathing. especially those who don't feel there's anything after death for them. hell, with the prisons here, a life sentence is better than lots of people's everyday lives. friggin cable TV, weight rooms, people get college degrees while in prison, etc etc.

It's not really about why you want to stay in prison over death. I mean, if you don't want to live anymore, it's not rocket science to figure out a way to end your life. I don't really understand why the seek for a death penalty.

conjugal visits are a rarity now adays. there are prisons that have little more than tall cages the prisoners can pace in. and an hour a day to pace in your cage? i mean id love that. you may only be outside or moving around for an hour a day but most people arent
and actually there seem to be a whole lot of prisoners who have some family whether its a gf or a grandmother. the stress of being seperate, the family giving up on them, or just not being able to afford to drive to wherever prison they are shipped to is a big deal many of americas prisons are way better than other countries. i wonder what the italian prisons are like? id wager they dont have basketball courts -------------------- Little monkeys making money

Super max prisons, where they largely give solitary and 1 hr outside, are being done away with because of the effect on prisoners. Solitary increases mental problems, mental problems lead to repeat offenders (or people asking for the death penalty lol).
Its a good idea to rehabilitate, however, its a good idea to punish the fuckers too. -------------------- |

Who cares what prisoners want? And that maximum sentence of 30 years they have in the works is a bad idea. Kill someone at 20. Turn around, kill them again at 50. And you can even get one more in at 80 I'm intrigued. How would you kill the same person 2-3 times? I don't have the statistics, but the average prisoner will not make it 30 years in the pen, much less 60 years. The life expectancy in these prisons is not very long. every prison I've ever seen has a courtyard area, and usually w/a damn basketball court. How many people can use a basketball court at once? Ten. Do you want to try to get in on a game and piss off some other guy that wanted to play? They do get recreational time, but it's so that their bodies don't deteriorate or atrophy. Some of these guys aren't in their for life and their crimes may not be violent crimes, so they will try to enter the real world again some day. QUOTE well, how many of these people are in touch with their families in the first place? also ever heard of conjugal visits? I'm sure there are quite a few that have wives/kids or are still in touch with their families. The problem is the stuff that Cathryn said, they lose touch with their families and have to deal with the fact that their loved ones will move on and eventually you will be stuck in their and they'll have to deal with the rest of their lives without you. The chapters of your family's life involving you are over. QUOTE aww poor babies I don't feel sorry for the inmates, but you don't even like it when pedestrians walk in front of you, dictating the pace you can drive your vehicle. How would you like being told when and how to eat, drink, sleep, shit, piss, exercise, and think. I also don't buy the shit about prisoners having more stuff than most people do like TV, beds, radio, blah blah blah. For people serving life in prison, their life is structured by people who basically own them. They can't do anything to improve their situation like people on the outside can (capitalistic society). They get to watch TV for an hour a day or whatever and read some books, but that's all their ever going to be able to do. It's not like they get to earn a college degree and use it, they are going to be the smartest motherfucker on Cell Block D with no way to put that degree to use. I see these extra amenities and educational options as a good way to keep prisoners entertained and doing something that isn't causing trouble to the other inmates or employees. i wonder what the italian prisons are like? id wager they dont have basketball courts Are you trying to say italians are too short and white to play basketball? -------------------- LANCE IS PRO-CENSORSHIP! playing basketball interfers with baking bread, running dice games, and making pasta. the mere stench of garlic as they exercise would get any physical sports shut down pronto

i don't see an issue with this.... if they wanna die, who am i to stop you? you realise you are a burden on society, wanna end your life... awesome. saves me the trouble of feeding you. may be the (easy way out) but i think the good of society is worth more than someone getting their "full prolonged torment" for their mistakes. seems that the priorities of prison systems is fucked up. reforming people to be intergrated into society again is the main purpose, but when you get life sentances, and they have no hope to get out, it's just torture, like pulling the wings off flies. let them end it. no repeat offenders, no reintegration, no wasted tax dollars, saves space, and lowers the number of the population by getting rid of a group of people that seem they have less to contribute to society than others. the more human and economical solution would be allowing them the right to die if they so choose

Yea, but your attitude of oh my god it's the easiest thing to be in jail is just ignorant. Yes that's right, let's not give them a TV, then they could sit in the cell with a couple other guys all day being bored as shit. That won't lead to fights or people being really pissed off because they're stuck in a space with nothing to do all day. Hey, let's do a social experiment, let's put you in a house, take out the tv, your computer, and most other things you have and make you sit in there. You'd go fucking insane. You probably couldn't go more than about 2 hours before you wanted to bust a window and just leave. Besides tv, no tv, basketball courts no basketball courts doesn't make anyone want to or not want to commit crime. The only thing going to jail does is make it harder for you to get a job than it was before, waste years off your life, make you be a better criminal, and have you lose what morals you had because you grow to hate everything about this society. |

The only state that allows prisoners to get a bachelor's degree in prison is Utah. And incidentally, their recidivism rate dropped dramatically. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! And prison, county jail, city lockup, etc. is hell. I have relatives/friends that have been in. Don't believe the media for 99% of what it says "good" about the prison system. -------------------- |

...Aren't you one of the people that always dogs on people for "always believing what the media tells you?" well yeah, when you have some other source of information, or "media" refers to entities which have agendas. if discovery channel or history channel has an agenda, it's news to me. |

My brother works in the prisons....and as much of a conservative as he is, he is in there saying that some of that shit is just too rough on the inmates. Yeah...you see tvs and basketball in prisons....they 1 hour rec time, and 30 minutes of tv time...........just enough to keep them from getting restless...but I can guarantee that playing basketball outside for an hour doesnt help you forget that for 20 feet in every direction is a shitton of razorwire, and every 50 yards theres a tower with a guy holding a rifle. Also a lot of those people DO go in and come out with a GED or HS diploma.
