in general, when I'm curious about what a web site/product is, I click the link that says "About". wasn't really all that difficult.

i did click "about", it just gave me a bunch of marketing terms that didn't help me understand what the product is or what it does

weird... when I click about it says:
QUOTE Microsoft Surface represents a fundamental change in the way we interact with digital content. With Surface, we can actually grab data with our hands, and move information between objects with natural gestures and touch. Surface features a 30-inch tabletop display whose unique abilities allow for several people to work independently or simultaneously. All without using a mouse or keyboard. the three videos show a lot of possibilities too. |

So it's a reproduction of the multi-touch displays we've seen for a long time but now microsoft is trying to sell it?

apple had something similar about 5 years ago, never caught on
and a couple of nyu students had a working model of this a whole year ago, http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/index.html |

i don't know where you can find a pic of their table, but it's basically a larger version of the technology in their touch-screen iPhone

Not to take this off topic and make it Windows vs. Mac but I think this announcement was deliberate today as it comes right before Apple's big June conference (where the release date of the iPhone is supposed to be announced).

how would this compete with iphone though? I don't think it's there to compete, just draw attention away from. This thing has a $10,000+ price tag and from what is being released, is just for commercial applications right now. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I never said it was... In all honesty, I have no idea of the product that Lance is talking about from Apple. The only touchscreen commercial product that I know if is the iPhone. The only test system I know of, is the one that was linked to earlier. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

i went to the website and i still don't know what it is, too much fancy flash and not enough actual content to actually tell me wtf it is yeah. That site pissed me off. I kept clicking "skip" on the gay ass slow as hell flash animation and it kept reloading the same damn animation. The site was slow as shit and didn't tell me almost anything at all about the fucking product. come on, microsoft; i thought you of all people would know that flash-based sites are pretty much a taboo now. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

Man i can't wait to see an RTS on this shit. Imagine moving your units by grabbing them and moving them.
Or even tabletop gaming... you throw your figures on the table, you get active stat readouts, can pull up your char sheet, see animated battles, have dynamic maps, etc. Brandon, take note. it seems like the coolest possible uses for this all lie in gaming. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.
