With the council's latest deadline for Iranian compliance ending Thursday, the report could be followed within days by consultations on new council penalties.

It'll be interesting to see what the council does, if anything.

A small fleet has deployed to the Gulf of Oman to conduct war games... Show of force.

We don't have the manpower to go to war with another country. Not enough enlisted and not enough officers to lead them.

we have plenty of manpower... although the media would have you believe every last soldier is in Iraq dying right now.

1,450,689 active duty (254,479 officers)
858,500 reserves

160,000 troops currently in Iraq.
~15,000 in Afghanistan

My source for lack of manpower was not the media.

How many of those are actual combat forces? You can't occupy a country from the sea or the air or by paperworking them to death :-\

How many are in places like Korea? We still have interests over there.

How many of those troops returned from a long-term deployment within 12 months ago? Long deployments with high frequency lead to low troop morale.

You get the idea.

Just defying UN sanctions alone won't be enough. They'll need to be caught attacking us or directly supporting those attacking us. Kind of like something that Stephan (think I spelled his name right) referred to in that War on Iraq thread.

BTW, there are reported to be 1,136,125 enlisted and 221,243 officers as of March 31, 2007. Highly doubt 30,000+ officers were accessioned in the past two months. Doubting the 70,000+ enlisted, too. We've lost 8,000+ troops between March 31, 2006 and March 31, 2007. From what I can tell, it looks like we haven't had that many active duty since 1997-1998. (Source: http://siadapp.dmdc.osd.mil/)

From the looks of it, the move into the Gulf of Oman is simply for war games and it is being blown out of proportion. It is one Expeditionary Force, I doubt they would try to invade with that.

send in the entire team from Predator, and to maximize effectiveness, give ahnold only a survival knife and some camo paint. (trust me, he'll do wonders) Rambo, but make sure he only uses a bow... that fucker could burn through 600 rounds of ammo, and only hit one guy.... jesus.... bruce willis could also go. but bruce is only a hard ass when he's covered in blood. and just for fun, we'll send richard simmons

well the details are slightly different... Iraq simply claimed they had no weapons and weren't building weapons. I suppose they were playing tiddlewinks for the five years they didn't allow weapons inspectors in. anyhow... with Iran, they're claiming they went from 40 centrifuges to 1600, so they can build power plants... so yeah... same shit different day.

and yeah I knew you had to say it tongue.gif

I wasn't able to find a breakdown by job. Not sure if that's public information or not. Part of me hopes that it's not.

Also not sure if they classify people in training and DEP as part of those numbers. I know they include people in the academies and ROTC in the numbers, neither of which are deployable. Then there's people with temporary medical conditions that people have preventing them from deploying. Oh hell, I even forgot the instructors that have to stay behind to train the new people. Ugh. What a mess.

active warfighters/combat arms units (infantry, armor, arty) make up a small fraction of the total mil. especially considering they are only in 2 branches out of 5 (I'm sure the coast guard is included in those mil numbers).

Well you are looking at a different population as well. The Iraqis hated Saddam just as much as the U.S. but there are some very staunch supporters of the Ayatollah and the regime in power and they would probably muster as many civilians as they could to fight off any invasion by the "Great Satan"

update today
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ld/4832082.html

QUOTE
"If Iran's right to nuclear technology is confirmed, all nations of the world will gather under Iran's political banner. Enemies of Islamic Iran know this, and for this reason they have mobilized," Ahmadinejad said.

The leader said Iran doesn't fear its foes' attempts to thwart its nuclear ambitions.

"The enemy is applying its ultimate capabilities against Islamic Iran, which will be useless," Ahmadinejad said. "With the support of the Iranian nation, we do not fear the enemy's hyperbole and psychological warfare. We are nearing our final goals."

not sounding too good... also doesn't sound like the words of a country who claims it's nuclear program is only for peaceful power production. Heh the democrats may get exactly what they wanted... to pull our troops out of Iraq... 'cept they'll head straight to Iran.

Well, Im just saying, Iran is going to hate America a lot more than her muslim neighbor nations. Additionally, the President of Iran made an announcement the other day that their nuclear program was in full force and at this point the can not back down... something to that affect. Looks like Iran is getting some weapons from Russia by way of Syria. Think it was like 40 anti-aircraft for Syria and 10 for Iran, all paid for by Iran.

Friend of mine is going to Iran to visit relatives tomorrow (hadn't seen his grandparents ever, etc...).
I'm curious to hear his first hand accounts of the country...

And I would steer clear from blanket statements that "they all hate us" because he said a substantial amount of the population is apathetic towards religion and against the present rhetoric by the "president". Those particular people are, however, for weapons buildup because they view it as an act of self defense rather than aggression.

I'll get back to you with more info about this when he gets back...

Fixed it for you, given their recent actions.
