Select Sam's Club stores selling the HD-DVD xbox 360 addon for $72.54.
http://news.punchjump.com/blog/2007/04/25/...54-at-retailer/ from what I've heard you can actually plug this into a computer as well (it connects to the xbox via USB), but I haven't tried it with mine. hell even if you bought an xbox 360 with it, that's $372 or $472 which still beats the prices of the standalone boxes. oh and the movie king kong comes with it. i've had it for a while, and have the 360 hooked up via the VGA cable to a samsung 61" 1080p DLP, and have played the king kong movie on it (said to be one of the best quality HD-DVDs) and can honestly say I have never seen a better picture in any setup ever. |

looks like they had an update:
QUOTE Pull back the reigns HD DVD fanboys, Akihabara now says that they've made a "huge mistake" with their translation: the original source called it "è—Âå…‰ HD DVD and è—Âå…‰ means Blu-RAY." In other words, Blu-ray HD DVD. Huh? Word to the wise: since both formats use blue lasers, it's best to wait for an English press release before either camp celebrates. here's one about four days newer though http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/04/24/hd-dv...-hd-dvd-player/ |

i haven't seen a blu ray disc or messed with one, but i hate the fact that it has to use JVM for the menu system. means we'll have some annoying ass menus from dvd makers who get bored. the HD-DVD standard menu system is really nice, very intuitive, and most importantly, consistent.

And the damn player doesn't cost 800$. Looks like a bad year for sony, playstation 3 a flop because it was so expensive because it included a blue-ray player, and a the flop of blue ray. sucks to be you

yeah the xbox HD-DVD player is said to actually be the worst player out of the entire HD-DVD crop. and you need special (hacked, but easy to get) drivers for it.
and get with the HDMI already, the VGA still looks washed out by comparison. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

uh... NO?
HDMI > VGA... go ask anyone at AVSforum if you don't believe me http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=695265 vga is the best analog cable you can get, but it's still analog. HDMI and DVI are both digital, therefore better. edit: http://techdigs.net/content/view/42/42/ -- another source, if you decide not to trust the fucking AV-ophiles at AVSforum. we're talking about the xbox 360. so maybe my comment was misleading, and should have read:
there is no HDMI cable for the xbox 360, dumbass. and most HDMI sources/TVs out there do not carry 1080p yet. VGA does. edit: and that link you posted is kinda off the topic... comparing S-Video to VGA. although I give AVSForum a huge thumbs up. |

i know about the damn elite... i posted a thread on it.. it's technically not out until the 29th but apparently some stores were selling it already. but for the existing xbox 360 the VGA cable is the best you can get, and the only way to get 1080p. people who are saying it looks washed out, are more than likely using a crappy old monitor or TV that doesn't support 1080p through the VGA. my samsung TV supports 1080p and 1:1 pixel mapping through the VGA, which for all intents and purposes means it's a 61" 1920x1080x60Hz computer monitor. 360 games and HD-DVD look amazing on it through the VGA. far better than through the component video.
and i'm perfectly chilled |

just for the record, they recently released an update (software-wise) for the VGA connector. It's now of decent quality.

ditto. I went with 1080i for the moment, as i don't have any 1080p sources, and i figure by the time 1080p drops that extra grand in price, i'll be ready for a bigger tv for my new digs.
